Mold on slides and negs

I

Ivan

I have a number of slides and negatives that have been badly affected
by mold. Scanning them in will effectively arrest the rot, but...

1. How do I clean my scanner (Nikon Coolscan V ED) afterwards to
ensure that subsequent images aren't affected?
2. Is there any way to clean mold off the film without also removing
the emulsion?
3. Any suggestions how to make the mold "noise" look less blotchy?

The crud is on the film. Blow as much of it off as you can with
compressed air. For slides, there really is no further issue; putting
them into the scanner should not cause a problem (nothing touches the
film at all).

For negatives, you probably will have to wash it off, because the
negative strip feeders actually touch the film with a velvet-like
material. You could cut the negatives and mount them. The other option
is to clean them, and that MIGHT ruin them, but maybe not.
