modem won't work after security updates

Modem wouldn't work - only thing that was different was I had installed some
security updates - I uninstalled them and modem worked again. They were:
Cumulative Security Update for IE6 for Windows XP (KB931768)
Update for Windows XP (KB927891)
Update for Windows XP (KB930916)

I have to have the modem - it is how I process credit card payments from
clients.
Any ideas on what the security updates may be doing to interfere with the
modem?
Any ideas what to check or change after I install them to make the modem work?

Any and all help greatly appreciated.
TIA
Cheryl

Try installing them manually one at a time, testing after each one, to see
if you can identify which is the problem.

I've being through the same problem when I downloaded AVG Free Edition. This
is probably due to one of the settings of Internet connection.
Please note that I am trying to make this easy to understand, if it isn't,
ask someone else what this means and I'm sure that one of these will work.

You could try one of these step-by-step instructions and see what works:
(1) If you are using Windows XP SP1, and behind Windows Firewall at the same
time, you need to upgrade to Windows XP SP2 but before you do, backup your
data. Installation can go wrong and accidently remove ALL your files and
drivers.
Ignore this if you are already running Windows XP SP2.

(2) Are your IP Addresses and DNS Servers correct? To make sure that they
are correct, go to Start > Control Panel > Network and Internet Connections.
There, double-click on the connection you're having trouble with.
Click on Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) and click on the "Properties..." button.
Click on Optain an IP Address automatically and do the same with the DNS
Servers.
Try connecting now.

(3) If that wasn't the problem, you may be on a limited Windows user
account. This means that you could only make changes to your user account
only. Ask the computer administrator to change your account to
"Administrator". If it doesn't work (or the administrator didn't let you)
continue to step 4.

(4) Did you use the CD that came with your modem? This CD is required for
proper setup and installation. If you didn't, now is the time to.

(5) Have you recently change your computer name or the computer description?
Some Internet Service Providers need you to have the same computer name as
described. You might need to restart the computer for it to take effect.

(6) Have you installed files, program's or drivers (this discludes windows
update)?
Try uninstalling them and then connect. WARNING: Do NOT uninstall drivers
such as batterys, display adapters (unless your monitors Plug and Play), USB
Root Hubs or System Devices. These are required for your computer to work
properly. Uninstalling them can cause an unstable system and cause more
damage then expected.

(7) Uninstall and reinstall the driver.

(8) Open Internet Explorer, go to Tools > Options. Click on Advanced and
click the Reset button.

(9) and this is the last one - remove that update from Windows Update. You
can do this by going to Add and Remove Programs in Control Panel. Click on
"Show Updates" remove:
Cumulative Security Update for IE6 for Windows XP (KB931768)
Update for Windows XP (KB927891)
Update for Windows XP (KB930916)

I would uninstall KB931768 first and see what happens. If it doesn't work
then choose the next one, connect again and keep repeating this until it
finally connects. Update or download an Antivirus Program (such as AVG Free
Edition or Norton Antivirus) and update the internal virus database (the
program) then run a full scan to make sure nothing is doing something to your
system.
Follow these steps and you might be able to break free from this problem.
The KB931768 update is probably interfering with Internet Explorer, so this
is the more likely one. By the way - I would recommend you download Internet
Explorer 7 as you can do more with it.

Good Luck!
John.
