modem won't let computer stay in standby mode

I'm running XP SP2 and IE7. When I place the computer into standby mode it
will not stay there while the modem is on. It cycles in and out every ten
minutes or so. When the modem is off there is no problem. Any suggestions on
how to fix this ? Thanks.

Hi John,

Is it a modem built onto the motherboard, or a PCI add in card modem?
I've had many instances of those types that prevent Standby. Driver
issue I guess. I now use USB modems and those work a lot better for me.
You'll have to test different kinds to see what works.

Have you entered the computer's BIOS and disabled the "Wake-on-Ring"
function of the integrated modem?

OP talks about turning modem's power off.
It must be then the external modem.

Oh, you're very probably correct, but I wanted to cover another
possibility, particularly since a great many posters don't always use
technically accurate descriptions of what they're doing or seeing. (And
since external modems - other than the DSL or Cable varieties) are a
rarity, these days.)

Problem solved in control panel under local area connections. Uncheck "
allow device to bring computer out of standby". Standby works fine now.
