had to repair some windows file by booting up from the XP cd.

after that, i can't seem to get a dial tone when trying to connect via msn.
the phone line is fine. so is the cable. i've installed all drivers. i've
removed my modem and put it back in. all the hardware seems to be functional
according to the computer, but when i try to get online or set up my internet
connection, it says 'no modem could be found.' is my modem fried?

also, when i look at my network connections, all i see is a the lan icon,
and no modem icon. what's the deal? thanks.

When you say "hardware seems to be functional according to the
computer", how did you test this? Make sure you have the cable
connected in the right place - it goes in the "Line" hole, not the
"Telephone" hole.

You know the phone line is fine because you connected a telephone to it
and got a dial tone? If so, then use the Hyperterminal program to test
the modem by dialing a phone number other than the one to which the
modem is connected, like a cell phone for example. You can usually find
Hyperterminal under Accessories>Communications. If you can get the
other phone to ring, then you know the modem is fine. If the phone
doesn't ring, uninstall the modem and physically put it in a different
slot. If Windows doesn't find the new hardware, the modem may have
failed. Test by trying a different, known-working modem.
