modem problem xp

I am still having modem problems on my XP, I have got a
speedcom internal pci modem and my comuter recognises it a
s an intel 536 ep modem for which I have tried the driver
off the cd and also downoaded the latest one from intel.

I am having trouble,

1) there is no modem connected icons on the taskbar
2) the line drops all the time
3) it takes about 6 attempts each time to connect
4) I have uninstalled modem and re-installed, there is
only one modem showing in phones and modems
5) I am unable to remove modem files in 'add & remove
programs' in control panel
6) There is no icons on the system for 'dial up
networking' is this normal?
7) In device manager, the modem is showing as installed
and working correctly on com 3.
8) Under the com ports in device manager, there is no com
3 displayed
9) On setting up a new connection, it now asks which modem
to choose, there is no modem showing.

It may be something to do with the software which I cannot
remove in add& remove programs but I do not know which way
to go.

I have had many problems with XP and am wondering if it is
worth all the hassle and considering going back to ME.

any ideas would be gratefully received

I need help too.
I have a similar modem problem with ME to XP. I have an
internal pci Lucent Win modem in HP7855US. It's a V90 56k
Cheetah, plug-n-play, Hayes compatible, v42 bis error
correction, v42 com port, etc. I upgraded my modem driver
to modem828.exe from Agere before and after XP upgrade.
Now I get 14400 bps with XP (was getting 49000 bps in ME),
but successful only probably 1% of the attempts to
connect. i.e. unable to connect most of the time. It will
attempt to dial up with screeching sound but "no
connect". I have exhausted all levels of AOL tech support
in US and India--still bad. Same phone line, same
hardware, with more than enough memory (384MB ram, no
other program running).

I have uninstalled the smartlink modem and blew the dust
from and connected my old external Dynamode rockwell
modem. XP recognised it as a different manufacturer butI
have now got the fastest connection I have ever had which
works every time. I was going to update driver but the
dynamode website driver, xp says is not suitable so i am
going to leave well alone.
My only outstanding issue is the modem icon missing from
the taskbar

I too have a lousy connection with lucent and USR
modems.Try going to the modem property screen under the
advanced tab and enter-+MS=V90.If that doesn't then try
+MS=V34.Other strings are at Modemsite.com Good luck!
