Modem not dialing

Les

I have created a dial-up connection on Windows XP Home SP2 but it does not
appear to work. If you go Start, Connect To, Connection Name, right click
and connect, nothing happens. If you load Internet Explorer it brings up
the connection dialog box but when to press connect it immediately comes
back with unable to establish a connection without trying to dial. The
modem works without problems in Hyper Terminal. The Modem is an internal
HSP56 MR. I have been through everything I can think of but nothing seems
to work.
Does anyone have any suggestions?

TIA

did you query the modem via diagnositcs in control panel (Phone Modem) or in
Device manager?

Does it work that way?

It's been a long time since I had to mess with a dialup modem, but if
the modem successfully dials a phone (like a cell phone) using
Hyperterminal, you know the modem works. I assume you're trying to
connect by dialing your ISP's phone number. I'd look at the dialing
rules to make sure they are correct - don't have area code rules in
force for instance or do if they are needed - and that you are dialing
the correct phone number for the ISP.

Just a thought.

Haven't worked with dial-up modems in years but one
aspect of dialing numbers that will throw people is
the advent of mandatory ten-digit dialing sequences.
Does this affect your area?

Because of population growth, and the explosion of
cell phones, faxes, and the like, some areas have
exhausted their available telephone numbers. This
forces the telephone company to add new area codes.
Atlanta used to have a single area code; now it has four.
And starting January 2, my own city will get a new area
code and we'll all be forced to prefix telephone numbers
with one of the two area codes.

This forces people to revisit their address books and
to modify their dial-up sequences.

I have managed to solve the original problem by reinstalling SP2, but now it
comes up with error 633 every time it dials. I have disabled everything
from starting at boot up and still get the error. I have read somewhere
that rarepair.exe can fix this problem but I can not seem to find it
anywhere. Does anyone know how to get hold of it?
