Modem nightmare in xp

This is a repeat of a previous request. Someone must be
able to offer possible solutions

I am running a AMD 2100 Gigabyte M/B 512 Ram with XP Pro
system.
I had a ESS 56h-pci internal modem. Everything worked fine
until last weekend when I was having problems with the
remote desktop connection. I closed off the system and
when I restarted later my modem was not working. The error
message was code 39. Okay I reloaded the drivers (I had
previously got the uptodate XP drivers from Microsoft
update) Same problem. I took out the card put it in a new
slot. Same problem. I experimented every which way but
always the device manager stated that the device drivers
where not loaded therefore the modem was not functioning.
Okay time to reinstall XP pro in case I had stuffed up
some registery settings earlier.
Same response.
I then took out the modem and put it into another system
in which it worked okay. I took thatreplaced modem
(internal Conextant 56bhp) which I knew was working and
put it into my system. This time the error message was code
41 stating device drivers were loaded but the hardware
could not be found.
I also loaded generic modems with the same affect.
Can any one throw some light on what my problem could be?

First of all...DON'T..use any updated drivers from M/S.
Go to the modem manufacture and git your drivers updated.
There's nothing wrong with your modem.
How I know...I did the samething (screwed up big
time).Live and learn,Bubba,live and learn...

Thanks for your reply.
However the problem occurred before I was forced into
looking for answers and the only update driver from MS was
the ESS modem driver. In all what I descibedearlier and
before I put in a different modem I got rid of the other
modem drivers.
I have since put in a new modem to no effect.I have a
suspiscion it may have something to do with RCP that I was
looking at prior to my modem meltdown.
Sorry Bubba, I am still alive(just) but haven't learnt
anything yet to solve this problem.
Someone Help!!!

Yes, but if the working driver has an earlier issue number than the
duff one in XP, there is no way to persuade XP to use it other than
clean-installing XP with the modem card pulled.
Colin.
