modem is disconnecting phone line

I have a US robotics modem which works fine on a older PC under Windows
98
When I installed it on a newer XP operating system PC the modem
diagnoses
as working correctly but when hooking a dial up phone line through it ,
it
automatically disconnects the line after a few seconds. This machine
was
configured to run under a cable modem originally. Also when I try to
create
a Dial Up Connection , XP will not give me that selectioin for a Dial
Up Modem
only Broadband.....

Anyone got any suggestions....

If the cable modem - broadband connection is still showing up, delete it.
Also make sure you have the newest modem drivers for XP.

Unless your modem has updated drivers for winxp it likely wont function
correctly, and in any case what speed will it work at?
Buy a new modem
