modem dialling?

N

Nel

I am running XP Pro and every now and then I hear a click from my PC that
sounds like a modem is picking up or closing down. I don't hear a dial tone
though.

I have an internal ADSL modem plus a regular v90 modem.

Is it possible that XP (or some other software) is dialling up someone?
something?

Firewall does not give any alert, but I wanted to know if I could track the
modems usage, maybe check a log file?

There is a type of "bad" program out on the Internet. This type of program
usually installs a secret dialing program which could connect your PC with a
web site that you do not wish to goto. This type of program is part of a
larger category of programs known as spyware/malware. You can easily clean
these off your system by installing. and running, Ad Aware 6 or Spybot
Search & Destroy.

Nel,

This may well be a modem hijack program activating. Fortunately, if
you're on broadband, and don't connect your dialup modem to the voice
network, it's not a real threat.

Get HijackThis, Spybot S&D, and expert advice at SWI Forums (all
free). Complete instructions are available at:

Paranoia comes from experience - and is not necessarily a bad thing.

And ... if you're not using the modem and have no intention of ever
hooking a phone line into it... then you could pull the card out of
the pc.

You might also have autodial enabled. Your modem is apparently installed and
operational so it would be the first logical choice for dialing
