I wonder what speed I can expect when connected my
cellphone to my laptop with IrDA for Internet connection?

When I tried I could call up my ISP but is getting only
9,6 Kb/s. It's a bit low in my opinion.

Where is the bottleneck? The laptop?, don't think so,
the IrDA?, don't think so, the cellphone?, maybe?

Does anybody know what can be done?

I am going to use this configuration because of a
very old telephone station in northwestern Bulgaria village which
have only analog (relay) switching which make it
impossible to use a regular modem. (poor connections all time)

Hi,

If you called a dialup ISP using your mobile phone, a 9600bps connection is
very reasonable. Sometimes you might do a little better (e.g. 14,400bps).
Phone / location / luck factor in heavily. For higher speeds, you would
need to use the cellular network's data services, such as GPRS -- but that
might not be an option somewhere in rural Bulgaria.

With that said, you still should make sure your IrDA port speed is set
higher than 9600, so that if you get lucky, the port doesn't become your
next bottleneck.
