MISSING TASKBAR ICONS

Lately I've noticed that the icons in the taskbar
notification area [bottom right] seem to come & go at
random. I've "customized" the taskbar with 10 items that
have been marked "always show" & locked the taskbar.
Everytime I reboot there's a different set of icons that
show up in the notification area. Sometimes they all
appear, sometimes just a few, sometimes just the clock.
Checked for viruses & found none. Used various
diagnostic & registry repair programs, no luck. XP home
came with my HP system & no recovery disk but everything
else works OK. Updates current except SP1 was removed
because it seemed to slow my system down. No problems
prior to initial installation of SP1 if any help.

Thanks for the ref to Kelly's Korner, still working on
the problem & can't seem to get consistent results
because my machine won't accept one of the fixes listed
for my problem. I'm trying to work around it.
