missing system 32 folder and regedit troubles

Hi all,

when I show all files and folder and look inside my windows folder I can't
see my system32 folder, BUT, if I go to the run bar and type
\windows\system32 it appears on screen. this has me confused.

Also in the run bar if I type regedit I get a black pop up dos style window
that just closes down right away or I may get random characters that appear
in it like wingdings etc, from time to time it will also display the
following error.

C:\windows\system32\regedit.com The ntvdm CPU has encountered an illegal
instruction.
CS:0000 IP:0077 OP:f0 37 05 0c 02 Choose close to terminate the application.
when I look in the system32 folder (found in the above manner) I can see
regedit as regedt32.exe. I only ever used to have to type regedit in the run
bar to get this to start but if I now type regedt32 it runs.

My question is should my system32 folder be hidden in this manner even when
I have show all files and folders selected, like even the search util doesn't
find it, only the above manner.

also what's with the sudden change in regedit and it's errors?

I did an sfc check and it said files were changed.

but it asks for the sp2 cd and I d/led the file from windows update, any
idea how to fix this?

Try provide the path as C:\WINDOWS\ServicePackFiles\i386 when it asks for SP2
CD.

You might need to run a antivirus software too to find and remove any
virus/trojan infection.

For this particular folder - Besides showing all hidden file/folders, you
need to change the option to show system protected files as well.
