Missing Messages I can't bget rid of

B

Bob Woolf ogwoolf

I am using Windows Mail in Vista Home Premium. suddenly I have messages in
my Deleted Items folder that 1) can NOT be displayed, 2) can NOT be moved,
and most importantly, 3) can NOT be deleted. Using Explorer I can find the
Deleted Item folder but it appears to be empty. I tried to delete the whole
folder from the Local folders list but it won't let me. I'd like to get rid
of these "empty" messages (all that shows up is the
send/recieve/subject/to/from line like any normal message and the viewing
pane shows "can not be displayed") for no other reason that the fact that
their presences prevents me from using the "Empty Deleted Items Folder"
option. I have to manually delete new entries to that folder one by one.

Anyone got a fix for this. Don't really care about WHY it happened, just
want to get it fixed. Thanks. (e-mail address removed)

Microsoft has a fix for that:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/941090
"Messages may be stuck in the Outbox when you use Windows Mail on a
computer that is running Windows Vista"

That page offers two download options. Unless you know for sure
you have 64-bit Vista, use the 32-bit option.

Although only 'Outbox' is mentioned, it will enable removal of stuck
emails from any folder.

I shouild have made it clear. They aren't stuck in the OUTBOX. Ironically,
they are stuck in the DELETED ITEMS folder. I can't even export the messages
to do a recovery. Everytime I try to it errors just like when I try to move,
delete, etc. the stuck/empty messages. It seems to block every avenue to get
around it.

OK! I spoke too soon. Even though my messages were stuck in the DELETED box
and NOT the OUTBOX, I tried the fix you mentioned. Guess what?!?! It
worked!! I still had to deletethem manually but they are gone. The EMPTY
DELETED ITEMS FOLDER still dowan't work and Win Mail which is supposed to
empty the DELETED ITEMS folder when you close it, doen't!

I also discovered another rather odd thing. You can NOT export messages to
a USB drive! Don't know why, it it give an error every time ans says
something about not enough disk space. There is plenty! 6 GB and 8 GB.
Tried both of my USB storage drives. You CAN, however, export to a folder on
the C drive and THEN you can copy or move that folder to the USB. Very
strange!

I say again: Vista is buggier than a New York restaraunt!! I really miss
my XP! I may wind up goimg back to it. At the very least, I'm going to
set up a dual boot with XP and Vista. The HP Help & Support tells yu how to
do it. Easy.

Did you hear about the latest speed test on Vista? Read it twom days ago.
The standard task was run on Vista with the new yet to be released update
against XP SP2 (SP3 is due out after first of the year). What it took Vista
60 seconds to run, took XP only 25! No surprise there.

Thanks for the help getting this fixed! Big time thanks!! I hope this
helps someone else with similar problems.

Yes, the Microsoft fix works for all folders, not just the Outbox.

I don't know if this applies to you, but Windows Mail tends to be
squirrely when used with a non-compatible antivirus like McAfee or Norton.

I am running Norton NIS 2008 BUT I'm NOT using the Spam blocker Add-on. That
does not work with WinMail as you said. It does scan the in and out mail for
malware. It's a special Vista version I downloaded from their Tech Support.
So far I've not had any problems (unless the stuck messages was due to
Norton?). My ISP does a pretty good job of stopping most Spam and the Junk
Mail option serves well enought for the rest. When this subscription to
Norton is up next year, I think I may go to F-Secure. Tried eSAn and it's
pretty good, but it has a bad habit of erasing some cookies ans stuff in IE7
you want to keep and I don't like the blurb it adds to all email or the way
it handles email with questionable content. Kind of awkward to get to it and
read it. Besides, F-Secure is about half the cost of eScan.

I don't have enough information to distinguish between various Norton
editions. Suffice it to say that many folks who reported problems here
had their Windows Mail problems disappear after uninstalling Norton.

Well, in case anyone needs to know, my version of Norton is 15.0.0.60. I
don't know enough either. All I know is that the version that I had on disk
did not like Vista - at all!

I really, really miss my XP!!
