I'm getting the Missing \system32\hal.dll error message, I've tried
reinstalling XP, Booting from the CD to the recovery program and changing the
boot/cfg, but it still says boot failure at start-up. Any help please before

Try booting up using the XP CD-ROM and choose to repair. Then choose the
Recovery Console Option...
Choose the number corresponding to your XP version and enter your
Administrator Password (then press enter).

After that you'll see a command prompt...enter the following command:

bootcfg /rebuild" command to fix boot.ini.
FIXBOOT will fix the boot sector on the boot drive,
FIXMBR will fix the master boot record if the NT loader
complains of a missing HAL or unmountable boot volume.

After the process is completed enter the command EXIT to quit (and the
system should auto reboot OK from that point onwards...

Hello Colin,

CAUSE
=========
This behavior can occur if any or some of the following conditions are
true: • The Default value in the [Boot Loader] section of the Boot.ini file
is missing or invalid.
• Windows XP is not installed in the location specified in the Boot.ini
file.
• The Ntoskrnl.exe file is missing or damaged.
• The partition path in the Boot.ini file is not set correctly.
• General hardware failure.

For the resolution look at http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=314477

Change boot/cfg suggests you have not got the right command. Boot the
XP CD and, instead of Setup, take the immediate R for Repair. Assume
any password requested is blank, and TAB over.
Give:
ATTRIB -H -R -S C:\Boot.ini
DEL C:\Boot.ini
(thus deleting the old one)
BootCfg /Rebuild

Its that last line I think you had wrong; also if you do not delete the
old file you may find the dud line in it is still present and being
called up
