Missing Fonts

I recently installed an old HP Photosmart P1100 printer directly to my
desktop PC with Windows XP operating system. I had trouble with the
installation and got help from a HP technician. In the trouble shooting
process he had me remove several fonts. I don’t remember how we did it (I
think by changing some lines in the directory) but they are no longer listed
in the folder, c:\Windows\Fonts. It finally turned out that the fonts had
nothing to do with the printer problem which was finally resolved by a “hardâ€
reset.

However, now I have a limited number of fonts available to me when I use
Word 2003. I know that it is not because of the printer capability
(WYSIWYG), because I can print using Word 2003 from my laptop using the same
printer and using the fonts that are missing from the PC fonts folder but are
available in the laptop fonts folder.

Not surprising, uninstalling and reinstalling Word 2003 in the PC didn’t
work. Also I reinstalled MS Office Student and Teacher Edition 2003 which
contains my copy of Word 2003, again to no avail.

Can someone help me obtain and reinstall the missing fonts?

Hi Vinny,

MS Windows, MS Office and many HP Printer drivers come with a set of fonts. Without knowing what fonts are missing and the Office
edition you have (i.e. there are more fonts in Office editions with MS Publisher included) it's not easy to suggest what their
original source may have been.

Thanks for your reply Bob. I have MS Office Student and Teacher Edition 2003
which does not include MS Publisher. Both my desk PC and laptop have Windows
XP OS and the same Office suite.

The frustrating part is that the Windows\Fonts folder on the PC has fonts in
it that are not available to me in Word but are available and printable using
the laptop. I can list them but I doubt if that would be helpful.

A second unrelated problem I have is that there are fonts that have been
deleted from the fonts folder in the PC. Can I simply copy those font files
from the laptop and paste them in fonts folder on the PC or is that too
simplistic?

I hope this is not too confusing. I would appreciate your thoughts.

Do you have any thoughts about my first question regariding fonts in my font
folder that are not available to me in Word 2003, though they are available
and printable (using the same printer) on my laptop

If the font files are not in the fonts folder then they will not be
available - which is why Suzanne suggested copying and pasting (from the
laptop). If the PCs are networked you can install the fonts from one to the
other.

Fonts will not be available to Word, even if installed if you do not have an
active printer set in Word.

Thanks Graham very much for your reply. I copied and pasted the missing
fonts from my laptop fonts folder to the one on my PC and the problem is
solved. Thanks to both you and Suzanne. I really appreciate it.

I did go to the site you referenced,
http://www.gmayor.comwhere_are_my_fonts.htm and it raises a question. I have
installed the latest driver available for my printer (HP Photosmart) on
Windows XP. Is that article saying that I can arbitrarily install the driver
of another printer, say an Epson, even though I don't have that printer, and
that may make more fonts available for me to use in Word and print them out
using the HP? That seems contradictory to me. Just curious!! Thanks again
for you and Suzanne taking the time to help.

While you can install the driver for another printer that is not physically
connected, to display its built-in fonts, or to display the TT or Adobe
fonts installed on your PC, you can only print the displayed fonts if you
have the printer in question present. This is useful if you don't have the
printer but are preparing a document to be printed by someone who has.

Thanks for the clarification. I feel much better now because I couldn't
imagine how I was going to print using my HP printer with an Epson driver.
But I understand the scenario you presented. It's something neat to keep in
mind and something I never would have thought of.
