Missing Floppy Drive A: link

C

conanjb

I have a PC with Windows XP Home. Recently the Icon for the A: Drive
has vanished from My Computer. When I click on a shortcut to the
A:Drive I get the following message:

The drive or network connection that the shortcut "Shortcut to 3 1/2
Floppy (A).lnk" refers to is unavailable.

I checked that the floppy works by booting from the floppy into Dos.
But when I boot into Windows XP I never see the Floppy Drive link in My
Computer.

When I check on the Floppy Controller, the device manager indicates
it's working correctly.

Anyone have any ideas on how to correct this problem.

TIA

Is a Floppy Controller based Floppy Drive or a USB Floppy drive ?

Is it enabled in the BIOS if it is a Floppy Controller based Floppy Drive?

It is a Floppy Drive and it's enabled in the BIOS.
I checked the BIOS to make sure it was enabled, and it was.

You can always drag and drop the floppy drive into the Documents and
Settings\<User Name>\SendTo folder. Might not be the right fix but it works.

Are the cables, floppy and power, snug and connected properly ?

When you boot the PC does the floppy drive light come on for a second or two ?

Delete sfloppy.sys from C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\
From a Command prompt type sfc /purgecache then sfc /scannow
System File Checker will be behind your command prompt window,
move it so you can see it. It will also ask for your XP CD.

I even replaced the floppy drive, and made sure the cables are connected
properly.
And when the PC boots the floppy drive light comes on for a second or
two. I can also boot from a bootable floppy disc. So the floppy drive
appears to be functioning ok.
