"missing" files

Wowbagger

I just copied about 1Gb of photos from a windows server 2003 machine to a
local folder on an XP Pro machine.

When I open the folder there are no files present. Right clicking on the
folder and selecting 'properties' tells me there are zero files occupying
zero bytes.

When I re-copy the same files into the folder the machine tells me that the
files already exist, would I like to overwrite them. I say 'yes' and the
files copy, but the files still do not appear.

Has anybody seen this before?

The system is brand-new out of the box from Dell and is running AVG, no
virus or other malware is found.

The files are probably hidden. Instruct "Windows Explorer"
or "My Computer" to make hidden files visible.

I have set the folder view to "show hidden files" and they are still not
appearing.

also, running attrib from a command line indicates that there are no files
within the folder.

Does the XP box use FAT, FAT32, or NTFS?

When you copy across NTFS partition file permisions are inherited.

Tools, folder options, view, uncheck use simple file sharing. Also, check
"show hidden files...". Now go to the folder, right click, security , add
your own user account, aplly.. click on advanced, owner, select your acount,
replace owner...

Turns out that one of the files was corrupted which was for some reason
preventing all of the files in the directory to go invisible. Scheduling a
scandisk for the next reboot fixed the problem.
