missing files in system32

Hello,
I've recently discovered that files from the system32 folder have
disappeared from my computer. These aren't necessarily important files, but
files for programs such as volume control, sound recorder, backup, and
accessability wizard have disappeared. What happened to them and how can I
restore these files so my computer is back to normal? Please help.

Hi

From Start>Run type

sfc /scannow

That will check for any system files that may be missing.

You may have to have your XP CD to hand.

I ran the check like you said and it scanned to see if all files were there,
but then nothing happened. Was something supposed to happen, or is that it?
How do I know if all the files are accounted for?

If SFC.EXE did anything it will be in the Event Viewer.

Open the Event Viewer...
Start | Run | Type: eventvwr | Click OK |
Click System | Look at any Windows File Protection

Ok. I checked the event viewer and it looks like everything was ok...but if
thats true, then where are the files for the programs that are missing?

volume control = sndvol32.exe
sound recorder = sndrec32.exe
backup = ntbackup.exe
accessibility wizard = accwiz.exe

Type or paste the *.exe name in the Start | Run box to see if they open.

I.e. Start | Run | Type: sndvol32 | Click OK

They are all Optional Windows Components. See this for how to get them
back...

Add the Optional Components...

To manually install Backup:
1. Double-click the Ntbackup.msi file in the following location on the
Windows XP Home Edition CD-ROM to start a wizard that installs Backup:
CD-ROM Drive:\VALUEADD\MSFT\NTBACKUP
2. When the wizard is complete, click Finish.

To Add a Windows XP Component
1. Log on as Administrator or as a member of the Administrators group.
2. Click Start, click Control Panel, and then double-click Add or Remove
Programs.
3. Click Add/Remove Windows Components. The Windows Components Wizard
starts.
4. In the Components list, click to select the check box that is next to the
component that you want to add. If the check box for a component is shaded,
only some of its subcomponents are selected for installation.

To view a list of the subcomponents, click Details. Click to select the
check box next to the subcomponents that you want to add, and then click OK.
If the Details button is unavailable, the component does not contain
subcomponents.
5. Click Next.
6. If the Insert Disk dialog box appears, use one of the following methods:
• Insert your Windows XP CD-ROM into your CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive, and then
click OK.
• Click OK to locate your Windows XP installation files. In the Files Needed
dialog box, click Browse, locate your Windows XP installation files, and
then click Open. For example, the installation files might be in the D:\I386
folder.

7. In the Completing the Windows Components Wizard screen, click Finish.
