missing files and folders after moving HDD

I recently purchased a new desktop (IBM XP Pro) and decided to move a hard
drive (120 Gig. NTFS) which was on my other pc (windows 2000), onto my new
desktop. Everything went well considering I never did this before, so I
thought. When I started up my new desktop, I realized I was missing an
entire folder on the HDD that I moved. The HDD seems to be performing
normally and I can access all the other folders and files, and no other data
is missing...except for the one folder and its entire contents.

Well, was it a system folder, may just need to un-hide it in folder options,
open my computer, tools, folder options, view tab, select "show hidden files
and folders", any change..?

Thanks for your reply, unfortunately that doesn't really help. They aren't
system files, nor are they hidden, and I have selected to show hidden files.
They are personal files and folders. I have performed scan disk, and chkdsk,
all resulted with no errors.

Can you move the HDD back to the old computer to retrieve the folder, was it
encrypted in any way..?

I moved the HDD back to the other PC to no avail. Still couldn't find the
missing folders/files. Is there some kind of s/w that can scan for these
files?

I will give it a try and keep you posted, thanks for your suggestions. Just
wondering, if by moving the drive from my pc with win2000 pro, to the pc with
xp pro, it may have created a partition which I cant access or am not seeing?
I mention this because before I moved the drive I had done some of the win
2k updates and it used that drive for the temp folders which I didn't delete
before moving to the XP pro pc, and for whatever reason perhaps it relocated
the folder on that partion?

Might pose that question here for more incite..

Unlikely, I would assume, if you did not encrypt or hide it to begin with..

Most likely C:\windows\TEMP if so, they are usually deleted after rebooting
the system, not always though, did you look in the old Windows Temp folder..
That's not really the best place to put a personal folder or important files
either, if you did they might very well be gone..

You do know what you are looking for by name, right..?

Well, I downloaded the data recovery s/w that was recomended, sure enough it
found the files, attempted the recovery, but the files are corrupted and
excel or word or whatever couldn't open the files. Also contacted Western
Digital, IBM, they dont have an explanation either. I just hope I don't get
audited over the next 3 years, because those files are Gone. Thanks for all
your help, I just wish I knew how it happened...Lesson Learned.........Back
Up, Back Up, Back Up!

Sorry, to hear that..

Not sure why the data loss was so selective, sounds like the data was
possibly corrupted to begin with, within the app that created it, or it's
the app you tried using to recover the files, if the data is being corrupted
by the recovery process, might try several app's to be sure.. here is
another that may help..

The above link may help, look it over, your call..

May also want to pose the question here too, about Excel & Word file
corruptions, see link below..

Good luck..

I followed your suggestions, unfortunately nothing seemed to work. Even
though I won't be able to restore the lost data, I would have been satisfied
if either the hardware or software vendors would have been able to at least
provide some type of explanation. At least someone might have benefitted
from the information. But of course, none of the vendors supports hardware
or software issues. I guess it will have to be filed under the ever growing
list of computer related anomilies. Hmmm, I wonder what kind of support I
would have recieved if my pc was a Mac. Regardless, anyone reading this,
always remember, Back Up, Back Up, and Back Up again.

And thanks again Jaymon, for your suggestions.
