missing drive letter

When I first started using my computer my DVD/CD-RW was assigned to E:.
Somehow it got assigned to K:. I tried to switch it back to E:, but E: does
not show up in the list of available drive letters. I do not have any
network connections.

My Computer shows the following:
A: 3 1/2 Floppy,
C: HP_Pavilion,
D: HP_Recovery,
F: DVD Drive,
G: MMC/SD,
H: CompactFlashI/II,
I: SmartMedia,
J: MS/MS Pro,
K: DVD/CD-RW Drive.

I checked with TweakUI, and it shows E: as available with a CD icon next to
it. I tried using the DOS utility, but it says that volume E: does not
exist. Anyone have any insight on how to make E: available again?

TIA,

Sounds like a hardware failure, but just in case, try this:

Do NOT be afraid of the registry hack here.
It is SAFE and has helped MANY people.
Respect the registry, don't fear it.

1) Log on with Administrative Privileges

2) Open the Registry Editor:
a) Go to Start then select Run.
b) Type regedit and click OK.

3) Backup you registry by:
a) Highlight My Computer by clicking on it once.
b) Click File (Windows XP) or Registry (Windows 2000), then Export
Registry File.
c) Select export range All; to ensure your entire registry is backed up
completely.
d) Select where you would like to save this backup, name the File, and
Click on the SAVE button.

4) Remove the Upperfilters and Lowerfilters values:
a) Go to
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\
{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
b) Highlight this key by left clicking on it once.
c) On the right hand side delete the values Upperfilters and Lowerfilters.

5) Restart your computer.

Or try this:

Select 'Windows Utilities' and scroll down to 'Restore CD/DVD drives to
Windows Explorer.'
Perhaps his utility will do the trick. =)

Thanks for your suggestions, fortunately, I was able to fix things without
hacking the registry. Using TweakUI, I cleared the check mark in front of my
E: drive and then applied the change. Then I added the check mark back in
and applied that change. After rebooting the E: drive was once more
available. I then used Disk Management to reassign E: to my DVD/CD-RW drive.

What's interesting is that when I open Easy CD creator it still shows my
CD-RW drive as K: rather than E:. I am wondering if this is how the drive
letters got messed up in the first place.
