Missing Cd-rom

R

Roberta

My compter has lost the cdrom.
I have xp.
Sometimes when I boot, the secondary master says Cd-rom,
but then says seconday master failed. Most times it just
says secondary master, none and I have to continue to boot
up using f1 key.
My cdrom does not show up in my computer or device manager.
Recently I tried to burn using Roxio easy cd, and I got
the error that I needed to install an update, which I did.
But now my cd-rom is not being recognized from my computer.
I have tried the patch called "XP_CD-DVD-Fix" but this did
not work.

Any suggestions?
Thanks a million!

First - let me say it sounds like a hardware issue since you are seeing
these symptoms before any Operating System loads. Replace either the
motherboard, the ribbon cable or the CD Drive in question.

However, you can try this...

Do NOT be afraid of the registry hack here.
It is SAFE and has helped MANY people.
Respect the registry, don't fear it.

1) Log on with Administrative Privileges

2) Open the Registry Editor:
a) Go to Start then select Run.
b) Type regedit and click OK.

3) Backup you registry by:
a) Highlight My Computer by clicking on it once.
b) Click File (Windows XP) or Registry (Windows 2000), then Export
Registry File.
c) Select export range All; to ensure your entire registry is backed up
completely.
d) Select where you would like to save this backup, name the File, and
Click on the SAVE button.

4) Remove the Upperfilters and Lowerfilters values:
a) Go to
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\
{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
b) Highlight this key by left clicking on it once.
c) On the right hand side delete the values Upperfilters and Lowerfilters.

5) Restart your computer.

Or try this:

http://www.dougknox.com/

Select 'Windows Utilities' and scroll down to 'Restore CD/DVD drives to
Windows Explorer.'
Perhaps his utility will do the trick. =)

It sounds like your hardware isa failing as the bios is not recognising the
drive. If the bios doesn't see the drive then Windows wont. Check the power
cable and the ide cable. Make sure they are fitted correctly. Try removing
them and replacing them. This will reseat them incase there is a bad
connection. If you still have problems try and borrow a cd drive and plug it
into the same connection and see if it works this should halp determine if
it's the drive or the motherboard.

Thank you for your help!
My computer is only 6 months old!

I have tried the Doug Fox fix and it didn't help.

When I went into the registry, on the right after left
clicking on
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{
4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}, this is what's
there:
Default
class
enumprop pages32
icon
installer 32
noinstallclass
silentinstall
troubleshooter-0

So I don't know which are the upper and lower filters.
Thanks again, Roberta
