Is it still recognized by the BIOS when you boot?

Hi Jerry,
Thanks for your fast tip and my delayed response because I went to my BIOS setup and reverted all the changes to my original
settings.

Yes, it recognized now on boot BUT still missing CDROM drive. I discovered many BIOS setting changed and especially on the
Sequence of Booting Devices: CDROM were changed to SCSI --- I have no SCSI devices and I changed it back to CDROM. Question: Will
it affect any new program installed?

I also went to System Information > Components > Problem Devices; This were listed:
Problem Devices: 56X CD-ROM
PNP Devices ID: IDE\CDROM_56X_CD-ROM
Error Code: 39

Please tell me what to do.

Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be
corrupted or missing. (Code 39)

Reasons for this error include a driver that is not present; a binary file
that is corrupt; a file I/O problem, or a driver that references an entry
point in another binary file that could not be loaded.

Uninstall the driver, and then click Scan for hardware changes to reinstall
or upgrade the driver.

On the General Properties tab of the device, click Troubleshoot to start the
troubleshooting wizard.

to get a good one?

Either with the software that came with the drive.

The drive manufacturer's web site.

Or use the XP generic driver.

C:\WINDOWS\Driver Cache

Hi Wesley,
Thanks for helping me --- your reply is most helpful. Actually this is my 2nd thanks note to let you know that I care BUT I cannot
find my 1st response post.

I promised to let know about my missing CDROM drive. I've to study your info and make preparation to troubleshoot. This really
bother me: What would happen if I uninstall the driver or if it is corrupted then where can I find a good driver replacement?

Your input is most helpful,

Hi Wesley,
Please check it if this correct procedure I'll take; I found there're 3 ways and I chose the Right Mouse Click method:

Open Control Panel > System Icon > Hardware tab > Device Manager button > Right click the yellow (!) 56X CD-ROM > click Uninstall
menu > click Scan for hardware changes > click Update Driver Icon (must I do this last steps?).

To recheck my CD-ROM drive: From Device Manager > Right click my CD-ROM drive and choose Properties > Troubleshooting button. I
stop here because I don't know.

If 100% confirm correct then I'll do the troubleshooting.

Microsoft Troubleshooting Wizard To reinstall your device (The
following instructions were given after hitting Troubleshooting button --- all Italic texts are my comments):

1.. Close any open programs and open Device Manager.
2.. Choose to Uninstall the troubled device.
3.. Start the Add Hardware Wizard.
4.. Click Next, and wait for Windows to search for Plug and Play devices. Most new devices are Plug and Play, so you rarely need
to go beyond this step.
5.. Choose Yes, I have already connected the hardware. > Next.
6.. If no Plug and Play devices are found, a list of devices appears. Click Add a new hardware device, and then click Next.
(Even though my 56X CD-ROM were given there).
7.. Click Install the hardware that I manually select from a list, and then click Next.
8.. Choose Show All Devices.
9.. In the Common hardware types list, click the appropriate device category, and then click Next. (No CD-ROM drive category
given because the PC knew I already installed one).
10.. In the Manufacturers list, click the manufacturer of your device; in the Models list, click the model name. (It is NOT
there or NOT in the given choices).

Or, click Have Disk if you have an updated or manufacturer-supplied driver to install for your device.
(Uh? MY CD drive is still NOT working, how can it read my CD? I stop here
because PC NOT showing CDROM drive and yet the CD has no working
driver in it, I actually did tried and struggled to fix it. It always says: The
specified location does not contain information about your hardware).

11. Click Next, and then follow the wizard's instructions to complete the
installation. (not possible and no use to go on).
12. Actually the driver is from Microsoft: C:\Windows\System32\drivers\cdrom.sys
13. I manually copy a new file for cdrom.sys thinking it were corrupted -- nope,
the CD-ROM drive still not working.

My CD-ROM drive is still not showing in My Computer Windows or in Windows Explorer windows and still not working.

Please help me,
