Minor problem with cursor on IE6 homepage

I'm running XP home(SP2) and IE6. I've got my IE homepage set to
www.google.co.uk but when I open up Internet Explorer from the
desktop, the blinking cursor, which is usually present in the search
box, appears very briefly and then disappears. If I then click on the
home button on the toolbar, the page reloads and the cursor appears as
expected. It's as if the focus on the initial load shifts to
somewhere else (but I don't know where!).

Has anyone any ideas what might be causing this? I tried changing the
homepage to altavista and this had the same problem.
