minimum spec problems

I have tried putting together a movie using a celeron 1.2
GHz machine with 256 Mb RAM. My captured clips play
perfectly when previewing them from the Contents Pane.
However when i put them in the Timeline and use the
timeline controls to play the clip, it is very jerky to
the point that you cant see what is happening. The audio
is fine throughout. Is this simply down to my machine not
having enough power?

Hi there,

Yes probably. 256MB of RAM is quite low, especially as XP will use most
of it for its own internal use. I suspect that your RAM is not DDR in which
case its speed will in comparison to DDR based machines be at least half.

Dependent upon which Celeron chip you are using, you may not have the
Maths co-processor "on-chip". If this is the case and because everything to
do with manipulating a video file is intensively Maths orientated, then you
are always going to have trouble.

In addition to this you will probably find that your BUS speed, often
refered to as FSB is going to be quite slow also. Basically your CPU gets
its speed from the FSB by multiplying the FSB by some number...meaning that
your motherboard works at one speed and your CPU at another. Therefore if
the multiplier is large it means that the motherboard transfers the data at
a very slow speed, and whilst that speed is just enough to play the file in
media player it will be no where near fast enough to do real-time processing
which is what you need when playing around with Movie Maker or any similar
program.

HOWEVER, this does not mean that you cannot create a movie using Movie
Maker as the speed of your machine whilst compiling your creation is not
relevant to the final output (The file) Any file you create will still play
normally. The length of time it takes to create such a file though will
probably be rather long in comparison to its actual duration when played as
a stand alone file.

Sorry its not very positive.

Best Wishes.....John Kelly
