minimizing file size when posting ppt file on website

I have a university website that I use to post my powerpoint presentations
for my students. I have very limited space and reached my limit after only a
few presentations. I attempted to convert my ppt files to Word
(file>send>word) handouts thinking that they would be smaller files. I've
found that the Word files are larger than my original ppt files. Any ideas
why? Am I doing something wrong? Any other options for posting ppt slides in
a smaller size format?
