Minesweeper #2

D

Dan Still

I still can't install Minesweeper (or any other Windows
games) with XP. This is where I'm at...

First I tried this...

1. With the Windows XP CD-ROM in the CD-ROM drive, click
Start, and then click Control Panel.
2. Double-click Add or Remove Programs.
3. Click Add/Remove Windows Components.
4. In the Windows Components Wizard, click Accessories
and Utilities (the words, not the check box), and then
click Details.
5. Use the appropriate method:
- If the Games check box is not checked...
- If the Games check box is checked...

***HERE'S MY PROBLEM: There is no Games check box in #5
above!!!

Then I tried this (from the advice of Jimmy S -
Thanks!)...

1. Choose Start / Run / Copy+Paste the next line into
the RUN box and press [ENTER]:
notepad %SystemRoot%\Inf\Sysoc.inf

2. Scroll down until you find the line that reads:
Games=ocgen.dll,OcEntry,games.inf,HIDE,7
and delete the HIDE from the line so it now reads:
Games=ocgen.dll,OcEntry,games.inf,,7

2b. Scroll down to the line that reads:
Pinball=ocgen.dll,OcEntry,pinball.inf,HIDE,7
and delete the word HIDE from the line so it now reads:
Pinball=ocgen.dll,OcEntry,pinball.inf,,7

3. Click File / Exit and choose YES to save the changes
you made to the file.

4. Click Start / Settings / Control Panel / Add-Remove
Programs and follow the instructions you posted in the
first post to reinstall Games now that they're listed.

***THAT DIDN'T WORK EITHER. Here's what happened: The
word "HIDE" was not on the original "Games=" line. But
it was in the original "Pinball=" line. I removed it
from Pinball. Then I could see Pinball on the list, but
not under "Accessories and Utilities". It's under a
nameless line above that. I checked the box next
to "Pinball" and also "Internet Games" and installed them
successfully... or so I thought. I still can't find them
anywhere. Where are they? How do I get Minesweeper,
Freecell, etc.???

Thanks, Dan

Hi Dan,

Is this a home system, or a corporate / business system?
Is your version of Windows XP branded (Dell, IBM, etc.?)

I have Windows XP Home Edition. I bought it online.
It's legal. The sticker with the Product Key says it's
an OEM Product.

My computer is a Dell XPS T450 from 1999. It originally
had Windows 98. I did a clean install last year when I
bought XP. But I've never seen any of the games.

Thanks, Dan

Hi Dan,

If you have the full version Windows XP CD supplied to you then..
To add/remove Windows XP Games: Click START / Control Panel /
Add or Remove Programs / Add Remove Windows Components /
Accessories and Utilities / [Details...] / Games / [Details...] / then check
(or uncheck and then recheck the games) / Click [Next] or [OK] to finish.

If you have only been given a Restore CD those instructions won't work.
