Milo: Start menu subfolders not allowing drag/drop for arranging

Back in January, I reloaded XP on a computer after a hard drive crash on and
some setting is different this time around.

On my start menu, which I keep in Classic Mode, I have a few folders for
things I access frequently. One of these is called Quickdocs and has
shortcuts to a bunch of files I use a lot.

Before the crash, I could rearrange these shortcuts on the secondary menu
that pops up after I click on StartMenu/Quickdocs. Now they are stuck in
alphabetical order and it won't let me rearrange them to put them in
groupings that make more sense to my usage. I don’t want to sort them on
some field OTHER than name. I just want to be able to rearrange them
manually with drag and drop to group common things and put most used ones
near the top.

I've pasted a screen print at http://www.improventures.com/play/temp.htm to
make it clear what the problem is. You can see that both the sub-folders and
the documents WITHIN those subfolders are in alphabetical order that cannot
be changed.

I've already verified that the “Enable dragging and dropping†option is set
right, so that’s not it. I CAN drag-and-drop items on the Start Menu
itself…just not on the sub folders that are in the Start Menu itself.

What do I need to change? thanks!

PS: I did post this months ago and never got a response. I know it's bad
form to re-post, but after so long, I'm hoping someone can help now.

Do they change, then the changes aren't remembered when opening the menu
folder again? Or, when you click/drag to a new position, they pop back?

In Control Panel, Folder Options, View tab, select "Remember each
folder's view settings". That might help..

Right click on Quickdocs and select Explore.

Start Menu\Quickdocs folder will open.

Try managing your other folders and shortcuts from there.

Open the folder (as WesLey said)
Copy all the shortcuts to another folder
Delete the QuickDocs folder
Control Panel > Folder options > View > "Reset all Folders"
Reboot the computer
Make a new folder in Start menu
Open the folder where you pasted the shortcuts
In List View, Arrange them as you like
Select all shortcuts then move them over the Start menu button, this will open
Start menu, move the shortcuts to the new QuickDocs folder.....

Sorry it took so long to reply...i must have forgotten to click "notify me".

I'm willing to try what you suggest, but I'd like more info first about what
other ramificaitions there are for doing "Reset all Folders". Are there
other options that I may have set along the way when I do this? is there
something I should screenprint so as to remember what I've set on purpose?

What exactly is it resetting? Is it the options below, like "hide
extensions", etc? (and why anyone would want to hide extensions is beyond me!)

Thanks.

What exactly is it resetting?

Reset All Folders button
[[Click to reset the folder settings that were in effect when Windows was
installed. This does not apply to toolbar settings.]]

To see what something does, like the Reset All Folders button, for example.

The question mark [?] is your friend.
On the title bar of most dialog boxes in the upper right corner is a [?]
button. As there are in many other Windows items.

[[Help is available for each item in this group. Click ? at the top of the
dialog box, and then click the item you want information about.]]
Left click [?] and your cursor turns into a ?, click the item you want to
know about. This will display a help topic if there is one.

You can also right-click the item and then click the What's This? command.

I can add and delete files the way I said. I just can't rearrage
the order of them. So I'm not sure that there's anything in what
you suggest that would change that. I want to be able to group
the links logically off the Quickdocs menu. Don't think I can
change anything about that order where you suggest. can't
imagine where it's being told to go with alphabetical, but it
must be somewhere and that's why I can't change the order.
