Migrating to 2007 - problem with 2003 files

We are in the process of migrating to 2007 but have come across a problem
relating to existing documents (Wills and Will precedents) that were created
in 2003. The docs contain outline numbering, LISTNUM fields and
cross-references. When the docs are opened in 2007, the LISTNUM numbers and
cross-references do very 'strange' things; where they should show, for
example, 5.2, they change to 1.1 and all the following sub-clauses within
that clause show 1.2, 1.3 etc instead of 5.2, 5.3. I have found a way to
change them back to what they should be, but if I scroll down the document
and then back up again, they revert to 1.2, 1.3.

Please, I need to be able to open these docs in 2007 and have them behave
correctly. Any help or suggestions would be very welcome.

there are so many ways to get the numbering _wrong_ in Word, I have to
include the "how to do it right" here:

How to control bullets in Microsoft Word (by Shauna Kelly)
http://www.shaunakelly.com/word/bullets/controlbullets.html
How to create numbered headings or outline numbering in your Microsoft
Word document (by Shauna Kelly)

How to restart style-based numbering (by Margaret Aldis)
http://word.mvps.org/faqs/numbering/ListRestartMethods.htm
Word's numbering explained (by John McGhie)

Basically, if there was a flaw in your numbering setup in 2003 to begin
with, there might not be a simple remedy for your problem. :-(
