Windows XP Microsoft Works File Problems

I recently purchased Microsoft 2010 and loaded it onto my computer. I already had Microsoft Works on my computer and have some files in works spreadsheet format. Now I can't open my Works XLR files. When works tries to open these files I get an eror message saying that THERE WAS A PROBLEM CONVERTING THE DOCUMENT with no sugestions or hint as how to correct. Works HELP is no help at all. An suggestions? I tried to convert the file to an XLS file but can't find a way to do so.
