Microsoft websites screw up IE6(SP2)

E

Euclid

After visiting a Microsoft website, IE6(SP2) in Windows XP Home has a
hangover effect. My local home page then invokes the dreaded InfoBar at the
top saying that some kind of dangerous active content has been blocked.
That's ridiculous. It only contains a list of URLs to my most frequently
visited websites, nothing more, and is purely html text, no graphics.
Closing then re-opening IE6 resets it to normal, but why can't Microsoft fix
their own websites to work right? I suspect it has something to do with
their worthless .NET, which I don't have installed. I had .NET for awhile
but it messed up my autologin to windows, so got rid of it.

It is not the website, it is SP2. If you were to read through the newsgroup
you would see that there are several others who are having a similar problem
after installing the SP2. Thus far, it has been difficult to find aspecific
cause and solution. However, often it has to do with the Javascript of some
websites, including MS websites.

You might try the following and see if it will help with your problem:

You can get the Sun Java J2SE RunTimes or SDK here:
http://java.sun.com/downloads/index.html (all versions - select using the

Sun also offers an automatic download and install of the 1.4 Java plug-in
here: http://java.sun.com/getjava/download.html

For the MS Java VM, you may need to install v.3805 or v.3809 prior to
upgrading to v. 3810 if you didn't previous have MS Java v. 3805 or 3809
installed.

If your OS is Win2000 SP2, SP3 but NOT SP4 then you can download and install
the MS Java VM v. 3809 from here:

For Win2kSP4, to get 3810 from Microsoft you now have to get Q816093 from
Windows Update Catalog - use the entry for Windows 2000 SP4 (this seems to
be the only Win2k option that has it) and then find 816093 in the list. You
can find directions for using the Windows Update Catalog functions here:

Flash & Shockwave not working

A few of things could contribute to the problem. Have you checked your
firewall to see if the ad-blocker or Flash blocker is set to on or block?
Also, there are several Pop-up blockers that will block Flash unless you
turn it off. I had POP-UP Blocker and it would not open Flash at all, and
it took me a while to figure out what was doing it When I unchecked the
Kill Flash it stopped.
Some Flash has pop-ups and the blockers will see them as ads or and kill it
any way.

Also, if you have SpywareBlaster installed, be sure you have Kill Flash
unchecked - Open SpywareBlaster - Tools - Click on Flash Killer then uncheck
"Switch off Flash Player" or in v3.1 Disable and block Macromedia Flash (4X

Hope this helps

I don't make a career out of reading this newsgroup. I usually only come
here to report problems, occasionally if I get bored with my usual NG fare.
And although your answer is appreciated, I'm not sure that I want to wade
through the horrible maze of possibilities which if offers... :)

At this point I'm not sure if I agree that the fault lies with SP2. I
haven't yet found any other websites that cause the InfoBar problem with my
local home page, just Microsoft sites. Microsoft sites with extensions like
..mspx and .aspx are the culprits, including the Windows Update site. Surely
Microsoft (of all people) should take proper care to make their own websites
compatible with Windows XP Home (SP2), which is what I'm running, so I
deduce that those sites all have some kind of incompatible coding bug. As
for the particular language involved, java or javascript or C+ or Basic or
assembly or Ukranian or whatever, I don't know about such things - that's
too technical, way over my head.

In addition to the InfoBar problem I described with my local home page after
visiting Microsoft websites, I notice that now a lot of URLs just won't
connect, and give the 'server not found' white page - especially links on
pages after I search google. I tend to blame that problem on SP2, but of
course I don't know. Maybe that is indeed a javascript or java problem,
whatever that means. Google is using some kind of code to goto those
websites that is not working, whereas if I type in the direct URLs to those
websites, they often work OK. I suppose that's maybe a javascript problem,
but again, I don't know about such things.

But those google pages and malfunctioning links etc do not cause the
subsequent "hangover effect" InfoBar problem with my local home page, only
Microsoft sites!

OK, I decided to try to read through your reply...

Start>Run "REGSVR32 JSCRIPT" indicated that it worked OK, although I haven't
the slightest idea what it did, nor whether it helped anything!

re java or javascript malfunctioning - how would I know? I don't even know
what they are.

As for the javascript browser test, my browser passed the test, and said I
have version 1.5.

I won't get involved in the horrible java mess between MS and Sun. Let them
work it out. In the meantime they are obliged to keep our browsers working
correctly! The java discussion in your reply is only confusing, as is the
javascript stuff. How would I know?

At that point I threw up my hands. Your reply is not a proper response IMHO,
just a catch-all which will probably help nobody. I am an end user, not a
technical genius, and don't want to get involved in that tech stuff. I just
want a browser and op system that works right!

And although your answer is appreciated, I'm not sure that I want to wade

At this point I'm not sure if I agree that the fault lies with SP2. I
haven't yet found any other websites that cause the InfoBar problem with
my local home page, just Microsoft sites. Microsoft sites with extensions
like .mspx and .aspx are the culprits, including the Windows Update site.
Surely Microsoft (of all people) should take proper care to make their own
websites compatible with Windows XP Home (SP2), which is what I'm running,
so I deduce that those sites all have some kind of incompatible coding
bug. As for the particular language involved, java or javascript or C+ or
Basic or assembly or Ukranian or whatever, I don't know about such
things - that's too technical, way over my head.

In addition to the InfoBar problem I described with my local home page
after visiting Microsoft websites, I notice that now a lot of URLs just
won't connect, and give the 'server not found' white page - especially
links on pages after I search google. I tend to blame that problem on SP2,
but of course I don't know. Maybe that is indeed a javascript or java
problem, whatever that means. Google is using some kind of code to goto
those websites that is not working, whereas if I type in the direct URLs
to those websites, they often work OK. I suppose that's maybe a javascript
problem, but again, I don't know about such things.

But those google pages and malfunctioning links etc do not cause the
subsequent "hangover effect" InfoBar problem with my local home page, only
Microsoft sites!

Hi Euclid :)
After visiting a Microsoft website, IE6(SP2) in Windows XP Home has a
hangover effect. My local home page then invokes the dreaded InfoBar
at the top saying that some kind of dangerous active content has been
blocked. That's ridiculous. It only contains a list of URLs to my
most frequently visited websites, nothing more, and is purely html
text, no graphics. Closing then re-opening IE6 resets it to normal,
but why can't Microsoft fix their own websites to work right? I
suspect it has something to do with their worthless .NET, which I
don't have installed. I had .NET for awhile but it messed up my
autologin to windows, so got rid of it. -E

It is not the website, it is SP2. If you were to read through the
newsgroup
you would see that there are several others who are having a similar
problem
after installing the SP2. Thus far, it has been difficult to find
aspecific
cause and solution. However, often it has to do with the Javascript of
some
websites, including MS websites.

You might try the following and see if it will help with your problem:

You can get the Sun Java J2SE RunTimes or SDK here:
http://java.sun.com/downloads/index.html (all versions - select using the

Sun also offers an automatic download and install of the 1.4 Java plug-in
here: http://java.sun.com/getjava/download.html

For the MS Java VM, you may need to install v.3805 or v.3809 prior to
upgrading to v. 3810 if you didn't previous have MS Java v. 3805 or 3809
installed.

If your OS is Win2000 SP2, SP3 but NOT SP4 then you can download and

http://secinfo.huji.ac.il/patches/Win-xp/msjavwu.exe

Then upgrade to v. 3810:

For all OS's except Win2kSP4 obtain v. 3810 here:

http://download.microsoft.com/downl...-9b18-423356321682/Q816093_W2K_SP4_X86_EN.exe

For Win2kSP4, to get 3810 from Microsoft you now have to get Q816093 from
Windows Update Catalog - use the entry for Windows 2000 SP4 (this seems
to
be the only Win2k option that has it) and then find 816093 in the list.
You
can find directions for using the Windows Update Catalog functions here:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;323166. (I am
informed by Torgeir Bakken, MVP, that if you rename the downloaded file
from

Problems with secure sites - Courtesy of Robert Aldwinckle

Try turning on prompts for Cookies and Active Scripting so you can tell
if
anything is happening. You could also open the TIF viewer and see if you
already received it. Make your view Details and order by Last Accesssed.
The Cookie appears as a txt file. There is also a request to use
ActiveX
which I couldn't see where it was being used but there is a script which
checks whether the browser can handle Shockwave Flash so I suspect there
may
be check for it
which I missed somewhere.

The point is that all of that gets done before the page starts being
rendered; so either your User-Agent string or your version of Flash may
be
affecting what else is being loaded and it may be that which is causing
the
404.

If you don't want to bother with prompting you would also get a different
result simply by using the Security tab slider and setting it to High.

Don't forget to set your security settings back to whatever they were
(e.g.
click Default) after testing. ;)

or ........

Flash & Shockwave not working

A few of things could contribute to the problem. Have you checked your
firewall to see if the ad-blocker or Flash blocker is set to on or block?
Also, there are several Pop-up blockers that will block Flash unless you
turn it off. I had POP-UP Blocker and it would not open Flash at all,
and
it took me a while to figure out what was doing it When I unchecked the
Kill Flash it stopped.
Some Flash has pop-ups and the blockers will see them as ads or and kill
it
any way.

Also, if you have SpywareBlaster installed, be sure you have Kill Flash
unchecked - Open SpywareBlaster - Tools - Click on Flash Killer then
uncheck
"Switch off Flash Player" or in v3.1 Disable and block Macromedia Flash
(4X
5X & 6X) in Internet Explorer.

Hi Euclid :)

I am truly sorry that the information I provided did not resolve your
problem, and you are of course, entitled to your opinion of my efforts to
assist you after you jumped into another OP's thread, and of course, you are
also under no obligation to try any of the information that I took the time
to research for you in order to try to resolve your problem.

But, before you pass off all of the information as useless, please consider
the following:

(NOTE: Instead of using Java, Microsoft has opted for what it calls a more
secure alternative--its own ActiveX. In Windows XP the Java Virtual Machine
has been dropped completely. You can find out more on this here:
http://www.pcworld.com/news/article/0,aid,59928,00.asp)

Being that may WebPages are designed to use JavaScript, this may be why it
is only happening in IE and not the other Browsers, who still support the
JavaScript, and why I provided the information that I did.

However, perhaps someone else will be able to provide you with further
information that will be more helpful.

Best regards,

Jan :)

Try turning on prompts for Cookies and Active Scripting so you can
tell if
anything is happening. You could also open the TIF viewer and see
if you already received it. Make your view Details and order by
Last Accesssed. The Cookie appears as a txt file. There is also a
request to use ActiveX
which I couldn't see where it was being used but there is a script
which checks whether the browser can handle Shockwave Flash so I
suspect there may
be check for it
which I missed somewhere.

The point is that all of that gets done before the page starts being
rendered; so either your User-Agent string or your version of Flash
may be
affecting what else is being loaded and it may be that which is
causing the
404.

If you don't want to bother with prompting you would also get a
different result simply by using the Security tab slider and
setting it to High.

Don't forget to set your security settings back to whatever they
were (e.g.
click Default) after testing. ;)

or ........

Flash & Shockwave not working

A few of things could contribute to the problem. Have you checked
your firewall to see if the ad-blocker or Flash blocker is set to
on or block? Also, there are several Pop-up blockers that will
block Flash unless you turn it off. I had POP-UP Blocker and it
would not open Flash at all, and
it took me a while to figure out what was doing it When I
unchecked the Kill Flash it stopped.
Some Flash has pop-ups and the blockers will see them as ads or and
kill it
any way.

Also, if you have SpywareBlaster installed, be sure you have Kill
Flash unchecked - Open SpywareBlaster - Tools - Click on Flash
Killer then uncheck
"Switch off Flash Player" or in v3.1 Disable and block Macromedia
Flash (4X
5X & 6X) in Internet Explorer.

If these steps do not resolve your problem, please post back to this

with the details and any error messages.

OK, I decided to try to read through your reply...

re java or javascript malfunctioning - how would I know? I don't even

As for the javascript browser test, my browser passed the test, and
said I have version 1.5.

I won't get involved in the horrible java mess between MS and Sun.

that I want to wade through the horrible maze of possibilities which

At this point I'm not sure if I agree that the fault lies with SP2. I
haven't yet found any other websites that cause the InfoBar problem
with my local home page, just Microsoft sites. Microsoft sites with
extensions like .mspx and .aspx are the culprits, including the
Windows Update site. Surely Microsoft (of all people) should take
proper care to make their own websites compatible with Windows XP
Home (SP2), which is what I'm running, so I deduce that those sites
all have some kind of incompatible coding bug. As for the particular
language involved, java or javascript or C+ or Basic or assembly or
Ukranian or whatever, I don't know about such
things - that's too technical, way over my head.

In addition to the InfoBar problem I described with my local home
page after visiting Microsoft websites, I notice that now a lot of
URLs just won't connect, and give the 'server not found' white page
- especially links on pages after I search google. I tend to blame
that problem on SP2, but of course I don't know. Maybe that is
indeed a javascript or java problem, whatever that means. Google is
using some kind of code to goto those websites that is not working,
whereas if I type in the direct URLs to those websites, they often
work OK. I suppose that's maybe a javascript problem, but again, I
don't know about such things.

But those google pages and malfunctioning links etc do not cause the
subsequent "hangover effect" InfoBar problem with my local home
page, only Microsoft sites!
-E

Hi Euclid :)

After visiting a Microsoft website, IE6(SP2) in Windows XP Home
has a hangover effect. My local home page then invokes the dreaded
InfoBar at the top saying that some kind of dangerous active
content has been blocked. That's ridiculous. It only contains a
list of URLs to my most frequently visited websites, nothing more,
and is purely html text, no graphics. Closing then re-opening IE6
resets it to normal, but why can't Microsoft fix their own
websites to work right? I suspect it has something to do with
their worthless .NET, which I don't have installed. I had .NET for
awhile but it messed up my autologin to windows, so got rid of it.
-E

It is not the website, it is SP2. If you were to read through the
newsgroup
you would see that there are several others who are having a similar
problem
after installing the SP2. Thus far, it has been difficult to find
aspecific
cause and solution. However, often it has to do with the
Javascript of some
websites, including MS websites.

You might try the following and see if it will help with your
problem:

so you might want
to start thinking about the future.

You can get the Sun Java J2SE RunTimes or SDK here:
http://java.sun.com/downloads/index.html (all versions - select
using the dropdown)

Sun also offers an automatic download and install of the 1.4 Java
plug-in here: http://java.sun.com/getjava/download.html

For the MS Java VM, you may need to install v.3805 or v.3809 prior
to upgrading to v. 3810 if you didn't previous have MS Java v. 3805
or 3809 installed.

If your OS is Win2000 SP2, SP3 but NOT SP4 then you can download and
install
the MS Java VM v. 3809 from here:
http://download.windowsupdate.com/m..._510A502BA8F9B6F19230BB2BCCE87D5474AC9DCD.exe
or here:
http://www.biologylab.awlonline.com...icrosoft.Q810030_W2K_SP4_5849/Q810030_W2K.exe

For Win2000 SP4, you'll need to re-install v.3805, from here:
http://www.download.support.safetec.net/msjavx86/msjavx86.exe
http://www.mvps.org/inetexplorer/msjavx86.exe

For all other OS's:

Download and install the MS Java VM v. 3809 from one of the links
here: http://ftp.idilis.ro/windows/sp/jvm98/msjavwu.exe, or here:
http://secinfo.huji.ac.il/patches/Win-xp/msjavwu.exe

Then upgrade to v. 3810:

For all OS's except Win2kSP4 obtain v. 3810 here:
http://fileforum.betanews.com/detail.php3?fid=1050022631 ,or here:
http://download.windowsupdate.com/m...l/MSJavWU_8073687b82d41db93f4c2a04af2b34d.exe

For Win2k - SP2, SP3 - you can also obtain v. 3810 from Microsoft
here:
http://download.microsoft.com/downl...-9b18-423356321682/Q816093_W2K_SP4_X86_EN.exe

For Win2kSP4, to get 3810 from Microsoft you now have to get
Q816093 from Windows Update Catalog - use the entry for Windows
2000 SP4 (this seems to
be the only Win2k option that has it) and then find 816093 in the
list. You
can find directions for using the Windows Update Catalog functions
here:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;323166. (I
am informed by Torgeir Bakken, MVP, that if you rename the
downloaded file from
here: http://fileforum.betanews.com/detail.php3?fid=1050022631 to
msjavwu.exe it will then also work for SP4.)

Both Java VM's can co-exist on your machine quite nicely. Just
select which
one you want to use in Tools|Internet Options|Advanced and restart
all IE browsers. Here, courtesy of Michel Gallant, MVP Security, is
a tiny utility
which allows you to toggle and view status of your current
Java VM vendor associated with IE:
http://www.jensign.com/JavaScience/SelectIEJVM/index.html

A note from Mitch Gallant:

"One note about the JVM Selector utility: If/when you install a
new version of Sun J2SE, you need to manually select to have Sun
JVM as default
JVM for IE (in install), or after install via the JavaPlugin control
panel.
This generates the necessary win32 registry entries, which must be
present
for the utility to know about JavaPlugin. After that, the utility
should work properly."

There is good information concerning all aspects of the Java
situation here:
http://www.javatester.org/installing.html

Be aware, however, that after Dec 31, 2007, MS will apparently no
longer be
distributing Java or providing any support for Java including
security fixes. See here: http://www.microsoft.com/mscorp/java/
so you might want
to start thinking about the future.

You can get the Sun Java J2SE RunTimes or SDK here:
http://java.sun.com/downloads/index.html (all versions - select
using the dropdown)

Sun also offers an automatic download and install of the 1.4 Java
plug-in here: http://java.sun.com/getjava/download.html

For the MS Java VM, you may need to install v.3805 or v.3809
prior to upgrading to v. 3810 if you didn't previous have MS Java
v. 3805 or 3809 installed.

If your OS is Win2000 SP2, SP3 but NOT SP4 then you can download
and install
the MS Java VM v. 3809 from here:
http://download.windowsupdate.com/m..._510A502BA8F9B6F19230BB2BCCE87D5474AC9DCD.exe
http://www.biologylab.awlonline.com...icrosoft.Q810030_W2K_SP4_5849/Q810030_W2K.exe
For Win2000 SP4, you'll need to re-install v.3805, from here:
http://www.download.support.safetec.net/msjavx86/msjavx86.exe
http://www.mvps.org/inetexplorer/msjavx86.exe

For all other OS's:

Download and install the MS Java VM v. 3809 from one of the links
here: http://ftp.idilis.ro/windows/sp/jvm98/msjavwu.exe, or here:
http://secinfo.huji.ac.il/patches/Win-xp/msjavwu.exe

Then upgrade to v. 3810:

For all OS's except Win2kSP4 obtain v. 3810 here:
http://fileforum.betanews.com/detail.php3?fid=1050022631 ,or here:
http://download.windowsupdate.com/m...l/MSJavWU_8073687b82d41db93f4c2a04af2b34d.exe
For Win2k - SP2, SP3 - you can also obtain v. 3810 from Microsoft
here:
http://download.microsoft.com/downl...-9b18-423356321682/Q816093_W2K_SP4_X86_EN.exe
For Win2kSP4, to get 3810 from Microsoft you now have to get
Q816093 from Windows Update Catalog - use the entry for Windows
2000 SP4 (this seems to
be the only Win2k option that has it) and then find 816093 in the
list. You
can find directions for using the Windows Update Catalog functions
here:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;323166.
(I am informed by Torgeir Bakken, MVP, that if you rename the
downloaded file from
here: http://fileforum.betanews.com/detail.php3?fid=1050022631
to msjavwu.exe it will then also work for SP4.)

Both Java VM's can co-exist on your machine quite nicely. Just
select which
one you want to use in Tools|Internet Options|Advanced and restart
all IE browsers. Here, courtesy of Michel Gallant, MVP Security,
is a tiny utility
which allows you to toggle and view status of your current
Java VM vendor associated with IE:
http://www.jensign.com/JavaScience/SelectIEJVM/index.html

A note from Mitch Gallant:

"One note about the JVM Selector utility: If/when you install a
new version of Sun J2SE, you need to manually select to have Sun
JVM as default
JVM for IE (in install), or after install via the JavaPlugin
control panel.
This generates the necessary win32 registry entries, which must be
present
for the utility to know about JavaPlugin. After that, the utility
should work properly."

Problems with secure sites - Courtesy of Robert Aldwinckle

Try turning on prompts for Cookies and Active Scripting so you can
tell if
anything is happening. You could also open the TIF viewer and see
if you already received it. Make your view Details and order by
Last Accesssed. The Cookie appears as a txt file. There is also
a request to use ActiveX
which I couldn't see where it was being used but there is a script
which checks whether the browser can handle Shockwave Flash so I
suspect there may
be check for it
which I missed somewhere.

The point is that all of that gets done before the page starts
being rendered; so either your User-Agent string or your version
of Flash may be
affecting what else is being loaded and it may be that which is
causing the

Some Flash has pop-ups and the blockers will see them as ads or
and kill it

If these steps do not resolve your problem, please post back to
this thread
with the details and any error messages.

Hope this helps

You can find out more on this here:
http://www.pcworld.com/news/article/0,aid,59928% 2C00.asp)

Being that may WebPages are designed to use JavaScript, this may be why it
is only happening in IE and not the other Browsers, who still support the
JavaScript, and why I provided the information that I did.

However, perhaps someone else will be able to provide you with further
information that will be more helpful.

Best regards,

Jan :)

OK, I decided to try to read through your reply...

Start>Run "REGSVR32 JSCRIPT" indicated that it worked OK, although I
haven't the slightest idea what it did, nor whether it helped
anything!

re java or javascript malfunctioning - how would I know? I don't even
know what they are.

As for the javascript browser test, my browser passed the test, and
said I have version 1.5.

I won't get involved in the horrible java mess between MS and Sun.
Let them work it out. In the meantime they are obliged to keep our
browsers working correctly! The java discussion in your reply is only
confusing, as is the javascript stuff. How would I know?

At that point I threw up my hands. Your reply is not a proper
response IMHO, just a catch-all which will probably help nobody. I am
an end user, not a technical genius, and don't want to get involved
in that tech stuff. I just want a browser and op system that works
right! -E

I don't make a career out of reading this newsgroup. I usually only

usual NG fare. And although your answer is appreciated, I'm not sure
that I want to wade through the horrible maze of possibilities which
if offers... :)

You might try the following and see if it will help with your
problem:

Script Debugging Problem

Open IE
Tools | Advanced
Under Browings:
Disable Script Debugging - Check it
Display a notification about every script error - Uncheck it
Apply
OK
