When I try to open Internet Explorer I get the following message:

Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library
Runtime Error!
Program: C:\windows\explorer.exe
This application has requesterd the runtime to terminate it in an unuseal
way. Please contact the application's support team for more info.

I have run Spyware doctor and ad ware, and did have some issues but have
cleared them up. I am still getting this message when opening explorer, as
well as contral panel, and more.

Can someone please help me with this.

Thanks
Warren

This is usually caused by spyware or browser extensions. Did you update the
anti-spyware programs before running them?

For browser extensions, if using a current version of IE6, click on Tools>
Manage Add-Ons and temporarily disable all extras. Try IE to see if error
occurs. If no, start allowing one add-on at a time - re-testing IE in
between each addition.

If Manage Add-ons is not available to you, try Internet Tools> Advanced and
remove the check in the box next to "enable third party browser
extensions."

Other thoughts:
In Internet Options> Advanced, disable script debugging and notification of
errors.

Sharon F,
Not that computer savey here. I can't access my control panel due to this
error popping up. I can't even open explorer window. Yes I have updated
both adware and spyware before the scans and have run them a few times now.

Try starting in Safe Mode. Once there, run those anti-spyware programs
again. Some spyware is really sneaky and works its way into safe mode but
most will not be active there and your anti-spyware programs will get a
better crack at removing all remnants. You can do the other steps while in
Safe Mode too.

To boot to Safe Mode, restart the computer. After POST but before Windows
starts to load press F8. If you have a keyboard with an F-Lock key that
does not "hold" the F-Lock setting (LED light goes out), press and hold
F-Lock and then F8.

A Advanced Start Menu will appear. Select the option to start in Safe Mode.
Log on with an account in the administrator group. If this is XP Home, log
on with the built in Administrator account. If no password was ever
assigned to the built in account, leave the password field blank.

Sharon,
Ok, I got it to open up i think due to the changes you had me do in control
panel. Are these things I should change back? When I did safe mode scan it
didnt ditect anything.

Warren, 9 times out of 10 when this error shows up in these groups it is
caused by spyware. No one particular known spyware but a sundry of them. So
can't give specific directions, just generalized.

Also, you just removed some spyware. It's possible that the error is due to
a leftover remnant looking for its buddies that your anti-spyware programs
already removed. If running the anti-spyware programs doesn't help, then we
have to keep looking for a cause.

The next category is browser extensions. And if that fails you would move
on to limiting what programs are allowed to run at startup. Since the error
always happens when you open IE (and some problems with control panel as
well), the spyware/browser helpers is the place to start your
troubleshooting.

It's up to you.
You can leave them off if you don't use browser add-ons for IE.

Or enable them again but become pro-active about checking the "Manage
Add-Ons" tool that is in IE now. Some malware falls into this category -
periodically check for addons that may have shown up here and disable them.
On the other hand, there are actually some good browser add-ons out there
that do not contain spyware or adware. One day you might want to use one
and the Manage Add-Ons area will help you to keep this category under
control.
