Microsoft Update fails in Vista ultimate

I purchased Vista Ultimate approximately six months back - I have not been
able to access the supposed extras at all in that time. Bellow is a copy of
tracert output from my machine to the microsoft update server:

18 ten2-1.blu-6nf-mcs-1b.ntwk.msn.net [65.55.226.158] reports:
Destination net unreachable.

As can be seen, the timeout occurs on an MSN device - something one would
assume Microsoft has control over. I have not been able to get updates
throughout the life of my Vista machine. THIS IS A SIGNIFICANT PROBLEM.

It is my hope that this is resolved swiftly, and I regret I can offer no
more information than I already have.
Trace complete.

Clicking on that link gets me to a page that says :
Use your Start menu to check for updates

Windows Update is now included in Control Panel. In the future, to check for
updates (or if this webpage doesn’t open Windows Update automatically):

Click the Start button, click All Programs, and then click Windows Update.

so that machine is alive (I get 65.55.200.221 as address but that is
probably one of several in a farm)
the tracert fails at same place for me, that is probably because that
machine will not allow it.
