Microsoft Update Crash

Hello. I am new to these forums, so please be patient with me. I use Windows
XP Professional with Service Pack 2. I have always kept it up-to-date, and I
also have Symatec Antivirus installed and set to "auto protect". For the past
year or so I have used Microsoft Update to get updates to Office, Outlook,
etc as well.

On Wednesday I started up my computer after a perfectly normal shutdown
several days before. This is when the behavior started. Windows would load
normally. However, when I attempted to access any programs (including
Internet Explorer) either the program would start and crash, or it would not
start at all, i.e. I would see the hourglass, and then the mouse cursor would
go back to the arrow. The HDD did not appear to be running, however I could
not even open the task manager to see what my CPU usage was.

I did an OS repair using my Windows XP disk, and everything seemed fine,
although I needed 75 updates. I downloaded all of the updates and still the
computer ran normally. I then tried to do the upgrade to Microsoft Update to
look for any additional updates, and the behavior listed above started again.

Is this a known problem (incompatability with some other program, virus,
etc)? Is there anything I can do about it? I would appreciate any assistance
that can be provided.

I am having the EXACT same problem, I used to have symantec loaded on my PC
(may have something to do with a reg entry left over or something?) and used
to always use automatic updates. So 1st time yesterday I turned on my PC and
attempted to run an online game (World of Warcraft) and my latency was over
4K!! i.e impossible to play I then tried to run Lord of the rings online
(would load ok then lock up and never start. Tried to Ctrl-Alt-Del and
nothing would happen absolutley nothing, so I then restarted my PC 4 times in
a row trying to get anything to work with no success (icon in bottom right
Microsoft update downloading 0% complete) so I restart in safe mode, turn
auto update off and now all is working fine. something fishy definately
going on here, maybe some malware / spyware trying to piggyback onto BITS?

Naw... Symantec is just slow when it comes to releasing new updates.
They should have it fixed in about 6 months from now is what I would
think. Did they finally get the bugs out of Vista installs yet?

The exact same thing is happening to me, I had to disable autoupdate
or my PC will freeze. If I try to manually go to Microsoft Update, it
crashes again.

I caught a fleeting glimpse of a notice of an update yesterday and my pc has
been freezing up all day today and giving me error messages that don't make
sense, such as when deleting a duplicate font from a program, one came up
saying IE had a problem and had to shut down. I've been all over my machine
and can't find anything wrong unless it was that update.

Updates will most likely break something somewhere. Although I use
repair as the second to the last choice. Did you try uninstall or System
Restore first?
