Microsoft Scanner and Camera Wizard - how disable?

My new machine, runnig HP Home, arrived not quite three weeks ago,

I installed the software for my now-discontinued HP 318 Photosmart
digital camera, It all works fine, as on my old machine. But there's
one hitch.

I have the camera's data cable plugged into a USB Port at the back of
the machine. To unload photos, I plug the data cable into the camera,
and then turn the camera on.

It doesn't matter whether I have already loaded the HP Photosmart
Imaging Software or not, whether I have loaded that and then opened
Unload PHotos or not - the Microsoft Scanner and Camera Wizard
appears, and begins detecting (and unloading) the images from my
camera.

I can't find any way to disable this Microsoft Scanner and Camera
Wizard. I go to Control Panel, and see only "Add Device" hwen I click
on Scanners and Cameras.

After years of trying, I still can't search - don't know how, but
under Help and Support on my machine, it says soemthing about Plug and
Play, and suggests that when I turn my camera on, Plug and Play is
recognizing the camera. I suppose that's fair enough, but then my HP
software already knows about the camera; does the Microsoft Scanner
and Camera Wizard have to start working on it, without my permission,
so to speak?

How can I disable that Wizard? I know I can Cancel it, but that's a
pest, and it scares me, too; soem kinds of magic, I don't like <G>.

Thanks for any help you can offer me!

Sorry! I had my fonts configured badly, and couldn't see what I was
writing. That should be XP Home, not HP Home. (I've reconfigured my
fonts, so I should be able to see now, at least <g>.

Hi Bob,

get a card reader....much faster and safer...

Ahhh; good idea. However, I'm on a low (pension) fixed income, and
can't afford one for some time to come. I think my gift-donors have
been astounding already, and I won't be asking for more <g>.

I'll keep your idea in mind, though, because it does sound like a good
one, though I have other probably higher priorities <g>.

Off-topic side remark, to go along with your nice off-topic
suggestion:

I used that AVG, and found it really excellent, and part of my gift
was the Single Professional Version. As long as we're making
suggestions for purchase, let me add this:

Dogs licked this email clean as it went out.
Checked by AVG Anti-Virus (http://www.grisoft.com).
Version: 7.0.225 / Virus Database: 262.1.2 - Release Date: 04-03-03

That quote is from my email client, Eudora. AVG doesn't work with my
free Newsreader, but it does assure outgoing posts have left a system
that's been checked and is being monitored by AVG. If you ever get a
chance to try the paid version, let me recommend it; its features are
just wonderful! You'd love the fast priority updates, and the
configurability. I've had about five updates so far this month.

(One good recommendation deserves another. <g>)

Update

I can't find any way to disable this Microsoft Scanner and Camera
Wizard.

I did the obvious, and consulted my dealer, by email. I sort of hate
to bother him; he's answered so many questions in the last few weeks,
but he came up with a suggestion, which I tired, and it worked.

He wasn't familiar with this process, but he suggested that when the
Wizard first popped up, I had allowed it to continue (which I had),
thereby establishing it use (and, apparently, continuation, too).

So he remarked that likely the camera appears as a drive to the PC.
(Windows) I'd forgotten that; that is what it does; I read it in the
manual when I got the camera, a bit short of two years ago.

So, he suggested I start Windows Explorer, plug the camera in, turn it
on, and look for the camera listed as though it were a disk drive. He
suggested I might then right-click on the listing, and then click on
Properties, and see what happens.

So I did that, after rebooting, to be safe.

Sure enough, the camera popped up, listed as though it were a disk
drive. So I right-clicked on the "drive," and selected Properties.
Three tabs appeared. One of them was Events. It showed something like
"camera connected," in a drop-down box, and below that were three
radio buttons. I don't remember the details, but at least one of the
buttons proposed doing something about the pictures in the camera, and
another said, "Take no Action" I selected "Take No Action," Apply, and
OK

Then I rebooted again, took a few test photo, and then went through my
normal unloading procedure, using the HP Photosmart software.

The Microsoft Scanner and Camra Wizard did nothing at all, never
appeared, so I'm back where I wanted to be. What a relief. I thought
you'd like to know what happened.
