Microsoft Program Incompatibility with XP

running XP SP2. Error message when opneing windows media player, v9

This version of Windows Media Technologies is incompatible with this version
of Windows. For more information, view the information at the Microsoft web
site.

did try to install v10 previously but to no avail so removed.doubt media
player worked subsequently though cant be sure. have just succesfully
downloaded v9, and was identifed as a Microsoft product.

system restores have not helped, not even back to the last succesful
restore, which now goes unrecognised.

I fear a reinstall of XP!

reviewing other cases and note viris checkers have been attributed to like
situations. have been using spybouncer and adaware?

how do i recover?
