Microsoft Outlook Error at Startup

J

Jim Stanaway

I am setting up a new Dell PC running Windows XP. When I startup I get a
message saying "Microsoft Outlook - Either there is no default mail client
or the current mail client can't fulfull the messaging request. Run
Nicrosoft Outlook and set up it as the default mail client. This message
appears twice at startup". When I check Outlook it says in Options/Mail
Delivery/Accounts that I have a mail delivery account setup as default. So
now I am stumped as to what to do" to eliminate the two startup error
messages.

Try a new mail profile.

Not certain what you mean by setting up a new Mail Profile?

I went into Outlook and set up a new Default Mail Client via
"Tools/Accounts/Mail"

Or should I be doing something else. This did not solve the Problem. Still
getting the Starup error and also can't email an Internet page as a Link or
as a Page. I get the same message...

Mail Accout != Mail Profile.

Control panel->Mail Icon->profiles->new.

I am running Windows XP Media Center 5.1 and when I go to control panel/Mail
I get" Internet Accouts as my next screen not Profile" This is the same
screen I get when I open Outlook when I go to Tool/Account/Mail. Going via
the control panel / mail -- again I tried setting up a new Account and
setting it as default but this did not solved the problem. I still get the
same Error message.

How or where do I find Profile ??? What am I doing wrong?

You're using Outlook 2000 in Internet Mode Only, which does not allow access
to the mail profile via the user interface. It always helps to state your
Outlook version and mode, if applicable, in the very first post so that
people can make the correct suggestions at the outset.

To create a new mail profile with your Outlook, you have two choices. One
is that you can reconfigure your Outlook to use Corporate/Workgroup mode,
which will change Tools>Accounts to Tools>Services and will make profiles
available in Control Panel. The second is that you can, with Outlook
closed, remove your current profile with the Registry Editor. It's in the
key
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows
Messaging Subsystem\Profiles\Microsoft Outlook Internet Settings . When you
restart Outlook it will create a new profile for you.

Thanks Brian for the info. but I am not sure how to do the things you
suggested. I have never used Regedit before and thus don't know how to go
about deleting my current profile as you suggested. I would need step by
step instructions so I don't end up screwing up the registry and really be
in trouble.

Thus, how do I go about reconfiguring Outlook to use Corporate/Workgroup
mode? This sounds to be the best alternative. I can't see where Outlook
allows me to change to the Corp/workgroup mode. Thanks for your help....

If you decide not to use Corporate/Workgroup mode, write back and I'll
detail it.

Click Tools>Options>Mail Setup. There should be a "Reconfigure" button
there. The button will say "Reconfigure Mail Support" or "Reconfigure
Outlook", or something like that. I don't recall the exact words. Keep in
mind that if you do this, you will not be able to access IMAP mail accounts.
If you don't use an IMAP account, there should be no issue.

Thanks Brian---
I reconfigure Outlook to use Corporate/Workgroup mode as you instructed and
this looks like it has solved my Problem.

I don't know what a IMAP accounts is so I don't think I use them. Thus, I
should not have any problem.

Thanks again!!!

I have read through the answers posted by Brian Tillman but no such file under
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows
Messaging Subsystem\Profiles\Microsoft Outlook Internet Settings .
I did find a entry under
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows CE series\Partners\1476103a
Could this be the right entry in my registry?
I cannot go to corporate/workgroup mode as the options button is not
activated when i open the tools menu
Thx

This should be there only for Outlook 98/2000 in Internet Mail Only mode.
Otherwise it will be
....\Profiles\yourmailprofilename

No. That's for syncing your PDA.

You could always uninstall and reinstall, choosing the C/W mode.

Not really. The installation routine never really provided that choice. It
decides for you unless you cancel the routine mid-way through.
I've never seen an installation of Outlook 2000 that didn't provide the
option to change modes.

It's been a LONG time since I installed Outlook 2000, so I was hazarding a
guess. I though I had remembered there was a choice, but I certainly defer
to your knowledge.

There is a choice, just not one anyone could ever discover on their own
unless they cancel the installation routine.
Something about the original post just doesn't ring true. There's more to
this story. The option to change modes doesn't just disappear.
