microsoft optical mouse

i have a newly rebuilt P3 700 512 ram it has a scsi adapter(adaptec)
standard keyboard, matrox video card ( dual head), sound on the board,
network card, 3 port firewire card, i am getting eratic operation of the
mouse a micreosft optical intelimouse (usb)the pointer will just stop for a
few seconds and sometimes disapear for a few seconds then come back and be
fine . Any help would appriciated BTW the keyboard is not affected. Thank
you
