Microsoft .Net Framework 2.0 Configuration ???

Saqib Ali

I recently installed "Microsoft .Net Framework 2.0 Redistributable" on
a Windows 2003 server, and noticed that there is NO "Microsoft .Net
Framework 2.0 Configuration" item under Administrative Tools

However my laptop which has the Microsoft .Net Framework 2.0
Configuration SDK, has that item in the Administrative Tools.

Why is there no Config Wizard with 2.0 (non SDK). I remember it used to
come with .NET 1.1...

..NET Configuration applet in .NET2.0 only come with .NET2.0 SDK, not
resitributale package, as .NET1.x. MS "thinks" average computer user does
know and understand DOS style command better than Windows GUI. So, MS
supplies GUI tool - the Configuration Applet to professional developers (on
encourage them to develop GUI programs, instead of DOS programs?) and gives
avearge user only CASPOL.exe to use in DOS command window. Or MS thinks,
average user simply should not bother .NET security configuration anyway,
hence, no need for the Configuration Applet.

So, your coices are:

Learn how to use CASPOL.exe at command line (not too difficult to learn, if
you do know how to type at DOS command line).

or

Install 200+MB .NET SDK for just wanting to use Configuration applet.

There is also some articles on the net, describing how to "steal" the
Configuration applet from the .NET SDK and instllal on a computer with
redistributable framework only installed.
