Microsoft Installer & Norton Ghost 2003

I have 3 PC's running X/p. 2/w home edition, 1/w
professional. All pc's will not let me install Norton
Ghost. I get an error 1721 indicating the
installer 'instmsiw.exe' is working with an incorrect
version OS. I have checked all the web info; downloaded
the current version from MS (it was the same ver
6.0.2448.0) and cannot get this to work. If I activate
the executable by itself, it indicate it's the wrong OS.
I ran a MS compatability check and none of the options
work; 95,98/me,nt,2000. X/P is not one of the options
even though Microsoft's web indicates that this is the
correct program and version.
I tried selective setup mode; had all startup programs
turned off; I unregistered and reregistered the .exe, all
without changing the condition. Symantec wants $30 for
assistance but I don't think it's their problem. I need
some new ideas. Thanks.

yyeeey, i remember that bug
check that installer (or your user account in other words) have write
permissions to a special folder..%systemroot%\installer if i'm not mistaken.

Please report if this solved your problem

Andrew, It sounds like you might have the solution but
I'm not sure how to use your information. I checked
regedit and that area is more than I can handle with
limited knowledge. I did a search on C for installer
without results and then checked control panal
adminstrator (me) with no leads. Can you fill in the
blanks.
Thanks,

start-->run
type
c:\windows\
then select folder options, enable to show hidden files and protected system
files
amongst other files & dirs there is a hidden system folder called
`installer`
right-click it and choose `security` tab, then check if everyone has write
access to it, alternatively click add, in the box in the bottom write
`everyone`, click ok, now you have `everyone` user group included in the
list of permissions, you check `allow-full control` for this group and click
`apply`, and ok...

it's like that

The Kernal wouldn't let me make any changes.
Here's the solution..This software was bought as an
upgrade. No where do they tell you that all previous
versions must be removed from the HDD by the windows
manager. I removed version 2002 and rebooted, then
successfully installed the current version 2003. The
error appeared to be comming from X/P because if I
executed instmsiw.exe it gave me a message 'incorrect
OS'. Anyway thanks for the help and I learned something
from all this.
