Microphone Not Working

N

Nicholas856

Hi,

i was not sure where the best place to post this was, but
I cannot get the microphone to work in voice
conversations. People can hear me but I cannot hear them.

I am running Windows XP and am using a Nvidia Nforce
board with inbuild sound.

Any suggestions on what could be wrong

Don't understand, if the microphone is NOT WORKING , then how are people
hearing you? Think you have the question backwards. Seems to me your
speakers or the ability to receive audio is the problem.

looks like i am a bit tired. I can hear people but they
cannot hear me... the audio tuning wizard does not show
that i am talking either and neither does it appear to
work in the sounds section of the control panel.

Sorry for the confusion

Not too sure of your configuration; however, make sure you have a normal
microphone (Office Depot $15.00) plugged into your sound card, (in the back
of the computer). Then when you run the Wizard make sure you select the
proper source (the sound card) and that you can hear yourself during the
test, but not during normal operations.

Greetings Nichalos,

Assuming you've gone through the Audio Tuning Wizard (click the Tools menu, then Audio Tuning
Wizard) and everything works fine there, you and your contact might try turning off the QoS
Packet Scheduler. To do so, click Start, then All Programs, then Accessories, then
Communications, and then Network Connections. Right click your network/internet connection,
then click Properties. Uncheck the QoS Packet Scheduler, and try again.

If that doesn't help and if you or your contact are using a router (with UPnP support), you
may need to remove the current port forwardings. To do so, click Start, All Programs,
Accessories, Communications, Network Connections. Right-click the "Internet Gateway" (should
be under the Internet Gateway heading) and choose Properties. Choose the Settings button,
click each 'msmsgs' or 'msnmsgr' entry and then choose 'Delete' to each one. Then close
Messenger (right-click the Messenger icon, choose Exit), then restart Messenger.

Finally, for testing purposes, both you and your contact might try turning off the Windows XP
Internet Connection Firewall (although you shouldn't need to for Messenger voice/video
connectivity). To do so, click Start, then All Programs, then Accessories, then
Communications, and then Network Connections. Right click your network/internet connection,
then click Properties. Click the Advanced Tab, and verify that the Internet Connection
Firewall is unchecked. As well, if your contact is using some type of third-party firewall
(ZoneAlarm, Norton Internet Security, etc.) have them make sure that Messenger is set to
"Permit All", "Allow All" or "Medium" (ZoneAlarm).

Jonathan,

thanks for the detailed reply. Unfortunately, I have not
made myself very clear i fear as I cannto get anything to
work in the audio tuning wizard. I guess this must mean
that I have a hardward/driver fault. Does anyone know
anything about the nforce sound card??

It is possible your Sound system is misconfigured. To check this: Click
the sound Icon in your System tray. Then Select Options/Properties. Now
Select the Playback and make sure the microphone is NOT checked, then select
Recording and make sure the microphone IS selected. Close out and try
again.

Also, if you do not have a microphone connected to your sound card, go to
Office Depot and purchase one ($15.00) and plug it into your sound card on
the back of the computer.

Thanks for the advice Joel. I do have a pair of
headphones which worked well on my old computer... but on
this one no dice...

I tried your other suggestion and indeed on playback, the
mic was ticked, I have unticked this now and made sure it
is ticked under recording. Unfortunately, this still
does not work.

I am feeling very frustrated by this, i am sure it is not
an msn problem but a problem with the card itself,
perhaps the wrong drivers. The shop where I picked up
the unit says I have a ledtek mother board, but when i
try to install the sound drivers, it finds nforce drivers
over the net. I have gone to the nvidia site and
downloaded their latest drivers and unfortunately this
does not help.

Unless anyone else has any ideas it looks like a trip
back to the shop for me.
