Microphone not working

B

Bruce

I have a microphone and stereo headphones combination
connected to my PC. I listen to CDs, etc. troutinely thru
the headset. Now I am trying to record speech with the
Sound Recorder in XP and nothing! The meter doesn't move
when I speak, nothing is recorded! I have XP Home edition
which came with my eMachine PC. Mic is properly conected
in the jack but no response. In fact, when I go into test
the mic, no sound response occurs. System does not seem
to even know it's there! My driver is Vinyl'97 for both
playback and mic. No "advanced" bar appears next to the
mic on any menus, however, though it allows volume
adjustmt. Of course, that's useless, as I am recording
nothing! Can somebody tell me what I'm missing here??

Also, since I want to record an entire book for transfer
to a CD, can anyone recommend what downloads I should
look for to do that better. It would be an awfully
big .wav file. Can I record in any other software better?
Please advise? Thanks so much!
