By "quiet", do you mean the sound through the mic is very low, or do you mean there
is no sound?

Open Volume Control (Start> All Programs> Accessories> Entertainment> Volume
Control)
Click the Options menu > Properties.
Select "Adjust Volume for Playback", check the box for Microphone, and click OK.
Back in the Master Volume controls, check the box for "Mute", under Mic.

Again, click the Options menu> Properties.
Select "Adjust Volume for Recording", check the box for Microphone, and click OK.
Back in Recording Controls, make sure the box is checked for "Select" under Mic, and
adjust the volume slider up if needed.
Under the Recording volume slider, make sure "Mute All" is NOT checked.

If you don't have a Recording Volume slider control, then you have not done what I
suggested.

Open Volume Control, click the Options menu> Properties.
