Mic doesn't work

I have just bought a microphone and plugged it into the microphone port at
the back of my computer. But my computer doesn't recognise that it's there.
It doesn't show up in the Sounds and Audio Devices section of the Control
Panel, and my computer can't find it when I try to search for new hardware
devices in the Add Hardware section of the Control Panel. I can't find my
type of microphone when I try and select it from a list.

1. Open XP's "Help and Support Center".
2. In the Search box type: MICROPHONE , and hit enter.
3. Click on "Setup a microphone".

I have done that, but when I tried to open Speech in the Control Panel,
Windows tried to install Speech SDK 5.1 but couldn't find the installer. I
couldn't find it when browsing, where could I download it from?
