I'm reinstalling an "emachine750." Well, it was riddled with spyware and
other malicious software. Lavasoft's Adaware found over 800 items, 5
running processes, 25 files etc. ...some of which reappeared after
rebooting, so rather than spend hours manually cleaning it up and tracking
down removal tools and following removal procedures, and considering that
there was nothing on the hard disk that the owner wished to keep - I used
the "factory restore" cd which was a Norton image job
Now during tweaking, and numerous reboots, and a few defrag's with Diskeeper
8, there was a huge meta-file at the front end of the hard disk. Some time
after three largish "Windows Update's" that huge meta file has disappeared !
....and Diskeeper 8 has just shunted everything up, using the space that the
meta file used to occupy. Before I made the connection to my ADSL and did
the Windows Updates I changed the paging file setting to "System managed"
but, I don't think it was anything to do with that!
Having said all that, and while writing this, (on my own machine), I set
Diskeeper to do boot-time defrag. and then set it to do a "Windows GUI type
defrag, and the meta file has reappeared in empty space, several gigabytes
after the "blue" (occupied space) on the emachines hd.
Why'd it move ?
