Messenger Updates

I have XP Home running on my computer. Yesterday I signed into the Microsoft
site with my .NET passport to get some support info - and since then, when I
log onto my Internet service I get a message that Windows Messenger needs to
be updated. I DON'T use Windows Messenger - it is in my sys tray with a
little X that is it not active.

I would like to stop getting this message as I don't want to update it since
I don't use it. Would uninstalling Messenger stop that message - or is there
another way? Will uninstalling it affect my Outlook Express? I don't mind it
being there, I just don't want to get those update messages.

Greetings TN,

Firstly, remove your saved Passport login in Windows XP, so it can't automatically sign you
in to the service (you can readd this back in the future if you like), click the Start
Button, then click the Control Panel. Then, click User Accounts in the Control Panel. Select
your account name, and then on the left side of the screen, under Related Tasks, click
'Manage my Network Passwords'. In the window that opens, click the Passport.Net\* (Passport)
entry and click 'Remove'.
If the window is still open with the upgrade question, say No, it should now stop trying.

Then open up Windows Messenger (click Start, then click Run, type "msmsgs" and click OK),
choose the Tools menu, then Options, then Preferences tab, uncheck 'Run this Program when
Windows starts' and click OK. Then right-click on its icon in the notification area/system
tray (by the clock) and click Exit.

Next, stop it from running with Outlook Express (if you're going to remove Messenger, you'll
also need to do this) by closing Outlook Express, then downloading and running the following
..reg file:

It shouldn't bother you again.

Thanks so much Jonathan - I'll follow your directions and I know it will be
fine! You folks are always so helpful!!

I didn't know just how to go about it, but I knew there was a way. And I
think that just yesterday logging into Microsoft Support with that Passport
caused the glitch - thanks for helping me undo it!

One more time Jonathan-

Okay - I did everything as you said, and the icon is back when I opened OE
again. When I click on Exit - it still tells me OE needs it to run. It is
okay to stay there as long as I don't get that notice to upgrade - but
should I do something else? I deleted it from User Accounts, unchecked Run
when Windows starts, closed OE, downloaded the reg file, but it is still
there! Maybe restart??

Any ideas?
