I am want to disable the messenger service. When I open up services
the messanger service does not show in my list but I know it is
running because I get the pop ups. I have Windows XP Home. Any ideas
on how to disable the messenger service?

Thanks for the help

Greetings Phillip,

Are you sure you're getting popups from the "Messenger Service", like this?

If you are, then it should be in the list. Regardless, if you download and run this .reg
file:

Then reboot. The Messenger Service will then be off.

If this isn't the popups that you're seeing, could you describe what you're seeing in more
detail?

Thanks for the reply. The popups are like the one in the link. The
PC that I am having problems with is a users PC that I support. This
PC is not on our network, but the connected to the internet from the
users home. I will run the reg file and see if this clears up the
problem.

This is the first PC I have ever ran into that does not have the
messanger service listed. The user was getting so many popups he
could not even browse the web. We change the PC name and that stopped
a lot of the popups but he is still getting them.

Thanks again for the help. I will let you know if this works.

Just delivered the reg file to my user today. He has been out of
town. He said it ran successful but did not stop the popups. He is
bringing his PC by this weekend for me to take another look at it.
The only thing left that I can think of is to check the registery and
verify that there is an entry for the messenger service listed.

With Messenger not showing up in the list of services, is there a
chance it is not listed in the registery?

I will post what I find out.
