It is amazing the number of folks that post for help on these messenger
service popups on a daily basis.
As Jonathan mentioned, you can disable the messenger service ( has nothing
to do with windows messenger), to get rid of them. Be aware though, you have
ports open and that is how they are able to come through. Kind of like
leaving your house unlocked
. Scammers are using this to spam you, and
often times try to get the innocent to purchase software from them to keep
it from occuring. You can bandaid it by disabling the messenger service in
XP, but those ports are still open. You can enable XP's built in firewall,
or purchase a good 3rd party firewall.
If your on broadband, you can also go the hardware route by purchasing a
router that has NAT protection. I am on cable modem, run it behind a router,
works very well, and I have never seen a single one of these messenger
service popups. I have a 4 port Linksys BEFSR41 router, paid about 60 bucks
for it, and well worth the money.
