messenger kills my screen resolution! huh?

hey all!

every time (100%) i open messenger and also, outlook
express, my screen resolution drops down to 800x600. i
thought it would be a video card driver issue, but ati
(mobility radeon) doesn't have any updates out there for
laptop users like myself.

i updated to messenger 6.2 thinking the problem might be
solved, but it wasn't. the resolution keeps dropping down
to 800x600.

what's up with this? any ideas?

anyone? i seriously need some help, this problem is
driving me crazy. it's doing it every time i start
messenger and every time i run outlook. however, when i
close outlook, my resolution goes back up to normal
1024x768.

ideas?
