messenger intrusion

I have 4 windows XP home / XP Pro systems which attach to
the net. Only 1 system has the following problem; when
on line grey pop ups appear at very regular intervals
with adverts for porn and regulated drugs. I am also
bombarded by popups telling me that Messenger is open and
that my system is vulnerable. I have Norton firewall
installed, but this has no effect (other than grinding
the system almost to a halt). I have factory restored
the system in the last 2 days so it cannot be accumulated
history that is the problem. Any suggestions (or am I on
the wrong forum?)

Stop the Messenger service.

Start > Control Panel. Double click Administrative Tools
(if you don't see it, click on "Switch to Classic View"),
double click Services.
Scroll down to the Messenger service. Double click it to
open the properties, set the startup type to "Disabled".

This will have no detrimental effects on your network,
unless you send messages to other computers on the
network via net send.
