Messenger 6 and Windows Messenger Incompatible

Alan O. Burstin

I have Windows XP Pro and have installed MSN Messenger 6.
I have configured Messenger to log in automatically.
However, as soon as it logs in I get a message that I
have been logged out of NET.Passport because I logged in
with a different PC. What is actually happening is that
just before MSN Messenger logs in, Windows Messenger
does, and then immediately after, when MSN Messenger logs
in, Windows Messenger gives me this message. Actually,
Windows Messenger should not be logging in when I log in
to MSN Messenger, but it does. Windows Messenger is set
not to run when Windows starts, and in fact it is not
even in the system tray, but it is running anyway. Since
there is a specific version of MSN Messenger for Windows
XP, I presume this is a bug that must be corrected. I
have uninstalled and reinstalled MSN Messenger 6 but the
problem remains. I have even reinstalled Windows and the
problem reappeared! Am I the only one???

Greetings Alan
I have the same setup that you described (but with XP Home edition) and I
don't have your problem, Windows messenger stays dormant. Somehow Windows
messenger is starting when you log in. I would advise you to check your
start up files in windows task manager (CTRL-ALT-DEL / Processes tab) (or
another start up software like Start Cop)you should have the msnmsgr.exe
(which is the MSN messenger's exe.) and NOT have msmsgs.exe (Windows
messenger's exe.)

OK, I finally found a silly solution which seems to work.
First of all, if you are having this problem, it is
because Windows Messenger is signing in even though it is
not supposed to do that. So, first thing is to go into
Control Panel, User Accounts, pick your user account to
change, and select "Manage my network passwords" on the
top left side under Related Tasks. Then delete the entry
starting with Passport.Net... This will make it
impossible for Windows Messenger to sign in
automatically. Once you do that, every time you start MSN
Messenger you will have to sign in manually with your
username and password. Don´t worry. Just sign in
manually, then sign out and restart your PC. Do that 3
times. Now you can go ahead and tell MSN Messenger to
sign you in automatically. You're back to where you
started, except that now Windows Messenger will be out of
the way. Don't ask me why it works, it just does.
Probably another bug, which solves the original bug...
Let me know if this solution worked for you as well. Good
luck...

Greetings Alan,
I saw the post in the forum.
Today, before implementing your advice, I made a Rstore Point, just in case
something goes wrong. Then I thought, why not remove Windows Messenger the
straight way : Control Panel -->Add Remove Programs --> Remove Windows
Components--> unchecked Windows Messenger.
Well, I have just done that and rebooted.
Now Windows Messenger is not operating. If I try to run it from a shortcut I
have in Desktop, it gives an error and can not connect.
MSN Messenger keeps worrking OK.
But, there is a strange thing: In Task Manager list I can see Windows
Messenger and it is using 10,068 K of valuable memory.
Another issue that annoys me is the fact that both Windows Messenger and MSN
Messenger request Server privileges. Why and at what level on intrussion is
it working ?

Cheers
Jaime
